7 Days / 6 Nights Samburu, Lake Nakuru & Maasai Mara Safari From Nairobi

Journey from the rugged landscapes of Samburu through the Great Rift Valley to the legendary plains of Maasai Mara on an exclusive seven-day private Kenya safari.

Duration 7 Days / 6 Nights
Start & Finish Nairobi
Nights 1–2 Samburu
Night 3 Lake Nakuru
Nights 4–6 Maasai Mara
Northern Kenya to the Maasai Mara

A Safari of Remarkable Wildlife Contrasts

This seven-day private Kenya safari combines three remarkably different wildlife environments: the semi-arid wilderness of Samburu, the Rift Valley ecosystem of Lake Nakuru and the world-famous savannahs of Maasai Mara.

Begin with two nights in Samburu, where the Ewaso Nyiro River provides a vital source of water for elephants and numerous other animals in an otherwise dry northern landscape.

Samburu is especially rewarding because several wildlife species associated with northern Kenya can be encountered here, including the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk.

Continue south to Lake Nakuru National Park for rhino viewing and Rift Valley scenery before spending three nights in Maasai Mara. The extended Mara stay gives you considerably more time for game drives, photography and searching for predators.

From Samburu's northern-specialist wildlife and elephants to Lake Nakuru's rhinos and the great predator-rich plains of Maasai Mara, this itinerary showcases the extraordinary diversity of Kenya.

Day-by-Day Safari

7 Days Samburu, Lake Nakuru & Maasai Mara Itinerary

Journey from Nairobi into northern Kenya before travelling south through the Great Rift Valley to Maasai Mara.

Day01

Nairobi → Samburu

Central Highlands · Northern Kenya · Afternoon Game Drive

Your private safari begins with collection from your Nairobi hotel, residence or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport according to your confirmed arrangements.

Meet your professional safari driver-guide and depart Nairobi in your exclusive 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser.

Travel north through Kenya's central highlands as the fertile landscapes gradually give way to the more rugged and semi-arid country of northern Kenya.

Arrive in the Samburu area and proceed to your selected safari lodge or tented camp for check-in and lunch according to your confirmed schedule.

Later, depart for your first game drive. Samburu's landscape is dramatically different from the southern parks and provides an excellent introduction to northern Kenya's wildlife.

Search for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, lions, leopards and other animals before returning to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 1: Lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. First overnight in Samburu.
Day02

Full-Day Samburu Safari

Special Five · Elephants · Ewaso Nyiro River · Big Cats

Spend a full day exploring the Samburu ecosystem with your private safari driver-guide.

The Ewaso Nyiro River is the lifeline of this dry landscape, attracting wildlife to its banks and surrounding vegetation. Elephants are frequently encountered in the ecosystem and may be seen moving toward or away from the river.

One of Samburu's greatest attractions is the opportunity to search for wildlife species associated with northern Kenya. These include the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich.

The reserve also supports predators including lions and leopards, while other possible sightings include elephants, buffalo, warthogs, baboons and numerous bird species.

Depending on your confirmed programme, enjoy morning and afternoon game drives or a longer game-viewing experience with a break for lunch.

Return to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and your second overnight in Samburu.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Second overnight in Samburu.
Day03

Samburu → Lake Nakuru

Central Kenya · Great Rift Valley · Rhino Country

After breakfast, leave Samburu and begin your journey south toward Kenya's Great Rift Valley.

The day's drive reveals another dramatic change of landscape as you travel from the semi-arid north toward the greener central highlands and Rift Valley.

Continue to the Lake Nakuru area and, depending on your arrival time and confirmed programme, enjoy game viewing in Lake Nakuru National Park.

The park is particularly important for rhino conservation and provides opportunities to search for both black and white rhinos.

Other wildlife may include buffalo, giraffes, zebras, waterbuck, baboons and numerous bird species.

Proceed to your selected lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight in the Lake Nakuru area.
Day04

Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

Rhino Viewing · Great Rift Valley · Afternoon Mara Safari

After breakfast, continue your Lake Nakuru safari experience according to your confirmed schedule before beginning the journey toward Maasai Mara.

Travel through the Great Rift Valley and across the Kenyan countryside toward the famous Mara ecosystem.

Arrive at your selected lodge or tented camp and settle into your accommodation.

Later, depart on your first Maasai Mara game drive.

The reserve's open grasslands support extraordinary concentrations of wildlife including elephants, buffalo, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra and numerous antelope species.

Search for predators including lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas before returning to your accommodation for dinner.

Day 4: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. First overnight in Maasai Mara.
Day05

Full-Day Maasai Mara Safari

Big Five · Predators · Savannah · Great Migration Ecosystem

After breakfast, dedicate the day to exploring Maasai Mara with your private driver-guide.

With no long road transfer required, you have substantially more time to explore different areas of the reserve and concentrate on wildlife encounters.

Possible sightings include lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards, wildebeest, zebra, hyenas, hippos and many species of antelope.

Your private vehicle allows greater flexibility to remain at interesting sightings and concentrate on the wildlife and photographic opportunities that interest you most.

Depending on your programme, enjoy a picnic lunch in the reserve or return to your accommodation before continuing with afternoon game viewing.

During the seasonal Great Migration period, large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra may move through parts of the greater Mara ecosystem. Their exact location depends on rainfall and natural grazing conditions.

Day 5: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Second overnight in Maasai Mara.
Day06

Second Full Day in Maasai Mara

Extended Game Viewing · Big Cats · Photography · Optional Balloon Safari

Your third night in Maasai Mara gives you another complete day to explore this extraordinary wildlife ecosystem without the pressure of changing destinations.

Your driver-guide can use knowledge gained from the previous game drives, recent wildlife movements and local conditions to choose promising areas for today's safari.

Spend time searching for the Mara's predators or follow elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra herds across the open plains.

The additional day is particularly valuable for photographers and travellers who prefer a more relaxed safari pace rather than rushing from one reserve to another.

An optional early-morning hot-air balloon safari may be arranged in advance, subject to availability and additional cost.

You may also choose to include a cultural visit to a Maasai community according to your interests and confirmed programme.

Return to your lodge or tented camp for your final dinner and overnight in Maasai Mara.

Day 6: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Third overnight in Maasai Mara.
Day07

Maasai Mara → Nairobi

Final Safari Morning · Great Rift Valley · Nairobi

Enjoy breakfast during your final morning in Maasai Mara.

Depending on your confirmed departure schedule, there may be an opportunity for final wildlife viewing before leaving the Mara ecosystem.

Begin the return journey toward Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley and central Kenyan countryside.

Upon arrival in Nairobi, your driver-guide will transfer you to your confirmed hotel, residence or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Your seven-day safari concludes after an exceptional journey from the distinctive wildlife and rugged landscapes of Samburu through Lake Nakuru's rhino country to the great wildlife plains of Maasai Mara.

Day 7: Breakfast and other meals according to your confirmed package. Final drop-off in Nairobi.
