A More Relaxed Tsavo East & Salt Lick Safari

The 3 Days Tsavo East and Taita Hills Safari from Diani Beach is designed for travellers who want more wildlife-viewing time than a short overnight safari while still keeping the journey compact enough to combine easily with a Diani Beach holiday.

The itinerary begins in Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya's largest and most celebrated wilderness areas. Its enormous landscapes, red soil and famous red-dusted elephants create the classic Tsavo safari experience.

After your first night in Tsavo East, the second day begins with another wildlife experience before you continue toward Taita Hills. This gives you the advantage of exploring Tsavo during different periods of the day rather than simply passing through the park once.

Taita Hills then introduces a completely different safari environment. The rolling landscape, wildlife sanctuary and famous Salt Lick area create a natural contrast with Tsavo East's broad red-earth wilderness.

With two overnight stays, private transport and several opportunities for game viewing, this safari provides a more complete beach-to-bush experience without requiring a long multi-day circuit through Kenya.

Three days allow you to slow the safari down: explore Tsavo East on Day 1, wake for another game drive on Day 2, continue to Taita Hills and enjoy a final morning in wildlife country before returning to Diani Beach.
Why Choose Three Days?

More Time for Wildlife, Less Time Rushing

The extra day gives you multiple wildlife-viewing periods and lets you experience Tsavo East and Taita Hills at a more comfortable pace.

01 Extended Tsavo East Experience

Enjoy more than a single game drive in the famous red-earth wilderness of Tsavo East National Park.

02 Taita Hills

Experience a contrasting wildlife landscape after leaving Tsavo East on the second day.

03 Two Safari Nights

Wake inside wildlife country on two consecutive mornings instead of spending your valuable early hours driving from the coast.

04 Private Land Cruiser

Your safari vehicle and professional driver-guide are dedicated exclusively to your travelling party.

Detailed Safari Programme

3 Days Tsavo East & Taita Hills Safari Itinerary

The itinerary below explains the journey in detail while preserving the flexibility required for a real wildlife safari. Animal movements, weather, road conditions and applicable wildlife-area regulations can influence the exact game-drive route.

Day 01

Diani Beach → Tsavo East National Park

Beach to Bush · Game Drive · Tsavo East Overnight

Your safari begins with collection from your agreed hotel, resort, villa or other accommodation in Diani Beach. Your professional driver-guide welcomes you and assists with your safari luggage before you settle into your private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser.

Leaving the Indian Ocean coast behind, you travel inland toward Tsavo. One of the pleasures of starting a safari from Diani Beach is watching Kenya change around you as the tropical coastal landscape gradually gives way to the drier vegetation of the interior.

The journey leads toward Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya's great wilderness areas. Once the necessary entry formalities have been completed, your vehicle enters the park and the safari changes immediately from road travel to active wildlife viewing.

Tsavo East is defined by scale. Its broad horizons and red-earth landscapes create an extraordinary feeling of space. Rather than feeling enclosed by the park, you often have the impression that the wilderness continues far beyond what you can see.

Elephants are among the park's most famous residents. The iron-rich soil frequently coats their bodies after dust bathing, creating the distinctive reddish appearance responsible for the expression “red elephants of Tsavo.”

Your driver-guide searches for elephants while also watching for giraffes, zebra, buffalo, antelopes, predators and the many other species that inhabit this enormous ecosystem.

Wildlife is free-ranging, which means every safari is different. Animals do not remain beside the roads waiting for vehicles, and sightings depend on their natural movements, feeding patterns, access to water and the conditions on the particular day.

This unpredictability gives a genuine safari much of its excitement. A quiet stretch of road may suddenly reveal elephants emerging from the bush, giraffes moving through the trees or a predator resting in shade.

Your guide uses knowledge of the park, tracks, animal behaviour and information available during the day to make the most of the game drive.

Because your safari is private, your vehicle is reserved exclusively for your party. You do not have to compromise your wildlife interests with unrelated passengers travelling in the same vehicle.

When an interesting encounter develops, there can be time to observe animal behaviour rather than simply taking a photograph and immediately moving on.

This can be especially rewarding with elephants. Watching a family interact, feed, communicate and protect younger animals often provides a much deeper experience than simply recording that elephants were seen.

Tsavo East is also lion country. Your driver-guide watches for tracks and other indications of predator activity, although no responsible safari can promise a lion, leopard or any other wild animal.

The park supports impressive herbivore populations as well. Giraffes can sometimes be spotted above vegetation from considerable distances, while zebra and antelope species provide classic East African safari scenes.

Buffalo are another important large mammal in the ecosystem. Their size, strength and sometimes imposing group formations make them particularly memorable when encountered.

Birdlife adds another dimension to the experience. Even guests primarily interested in large mammals often find themselves appreciating the colours, calls and behaviour of the many birds encountered during game drives.

As the day progresses, you travel toward your confirmed lodge or tented camp. The drive itself remains part of the safari, so wildlife viewing continues rather than stopping simply because you are heading toward accommodation.

You arrive for check-in and the meal arrangements included in your confirmed package. There is then an opportunity to relax before continuing with the day's wildlife programme.

The afternoon provides another chance to explore Tsavo East. Changing temperatures and light conditions can influence animal behaviour, making different periods of the day interesting for different reasons.

As the heat begins to ease, elephants and other animals may move toward water or feeding areas. Predators can also become more active as evening approaches.

The warm late-afternoon light is particularly beautiful against Tsavo's red soil and can produce excellent photographic conditions.

Your guide continues exploring until it is time to return according to park regulations and the confirmed programme.

Dinner is served at your lodge or camp, followed by your first night in safari country.

The difference between sleeping in Tsavo and returning to Diani Beach the same evening is significant. After dark, the sounds and atmosphere of the wilderness create a completely different experience.

You also begin the following morning already inside or close to the park, allowing valuable early hours to be devoted to wildlife rather than a long transfer from the coast.

Day 1: Meals according to your confirmed package. Dinner and overnight at your confirmed Tsavo East lodge or camp.
Day 02

Tsavo East → Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

Early Game Drive · Breakfast · Taita Hills · Afternoon Safari

Day 2 begins in the cool early-morning atmosphere of Tsavo East. Waking in safari country gives you the opportunity to experience the park at a time when light, temperature and animal behaviour can differ significantly from the middle of the day.

You head out with your driver-guide for an early wildlife-viewing experience. The landscape may still be touched by the softer colours of dawn as you begin searching for animals.

Predators are naturally among the species your guide watches for during these cooler hours. Lions inhabit Tsavo East, and early morning can provide rewarding opportunities, although sightings always depend on natural movements.

Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra and antelopes may also be encountered as the park becomes increasingly active with the new day.

After the morning game drive, you return to your lodge or camp for breakfast. Having already spent time in the park before breakfast is one of the major advantages of a multi-day safari.

After breakfast and check-out, you leave the lodge with your luggage loaded into the Land Cruiser. The journey toward the park exit remains a game drive, so cameras and binoculars should remain accessible.

There may still be opportunities for memorable wildlife encounters before you leave Tsavo East. Animals move continuously, and some of the best sightings can occur during an apparently simple transfer.

You then continue toward the Taita Hills wildlife area, beginning the second major chapter of your safari.

The landscape changes noticeably. Tsavo East's broad red-earth wilderness gives way to a more varied setting influenced by the Taita Hills and surrounding plains.

This contrast is one of the main reasons the itinerary works so well. Instead of spending all three days in an identical environment, you experience two distinctive wildlife landscapes.

On reaching Taita Hills, you proceed according to your confirmed accommodation arrangements and safari programme.

The wildlife sanctuary supports elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, antelopes, predators and numerous bird species.

After lunch and an opportunity to relax, the afternoon game drive introduces you more fully to the Taita Hills environment.

Your guide again uses local conditions and wildlife movements to determine the most productive game-viewing areas available within the programme.

Elephants may move through the sanctuary toward water and feeding areas. Against the Taita landscape, these encounters feel visually different from the red-earth elephant scenes experienced in Tsavo East.

Giraffes can be particularly attractive against the hills and open sky, while zebra and antelope species contribute to the classic savannah landscape.

Buffalo may also be encountered, and your guide remains alert for lions and other predators.

As always, sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed. The safari is about exploring a living ecosystem rather than following a predetermined animal checklist.

The later afternoon brings softer light and changing temperatures. Wildlife may become increasingly active as the heat of the day decreases.

If your confirmed accommodation is Salt Lick Safari Lodge, the property itself adds another memorable dimension to the experience. Its distinctive stilted design and elevated walkways have made it one of Kenya's best-known safari lodges.

Wildlife may approach water sources around the lodge, meaning the safari atmosphere can continue even after the formal game drive has finished.

The exact level of activity naturally varies because the animals move freely. Nevertheless, remaining in the heart of wildlife country creates a completely different atmosphere from staying at the coast.

As evening approaches, you return to your lodge according to sanctuary rules and your programme.

Dinner is followed by time to relax and enjoy your second night in the wilderness.

By this stage of the safari, you have already experienced Tsavo East during several different periods of the day and explored a second wildlife ecosystem in Taita Hills.

This is what distinguishes the three-day itinerary from the shorter two-day combination: there is more time to absorb each destination rather than moving through the entire route at a faster pace.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to the confirmed package. Overnight in the Taita Hills wildlife area.
Day 03

Taita Hills Morning Game Drive → Diani Beach

Final Wildlife Experience · Breakfast · Lunch Stop · Return to Coast

Your final safari morning begins inside the Taita Hills wildlife environment. Rather than immediately packing the vehicle and driving toward Diani Beach, the programme allows you another opportunity to experience wildlife during the cooler early hours.

The morning landscape often has a particularly peaceful quality. Softer light, cooler temperatures and the changing activity of animals make this a rewarding time to be outside.

Your driver-guide begins the final game drive by searching areas that may offer productive wildlife viewing based on current conditions.

Elephants remain one of the principal highlights. Depending on their movements, you may encounter them travelling across the sanctuary, feeding or approaching water.

Buffalo, giraffes, zebra and antelopes are also possible, together with numerous smaller species that contribute to the ecosystem.

Predators remain a possibility until the very end of the safari. Your guide continues watching for tracks, alarm calls and other signs that may indicate the presence of lions or other carnivores.

The search itself is an important part of the experience. A genuine safari does not follow a script, and there is always an element of anticipation as the vehicle rounds a corner or enters a new section of habitat.

Birdlife can also be particularly active in the morning, giving guests interested in photography or natural history additional reasons to observe carefully.

After the morning game-viewing period, you return to your lodge for breakfast. There is time to enjoy the setting, prepare your luggage and check out.

If staying at Salt Lick Safari Lodge, this is also a final opportunity to enjoy its distinctive architecture and watch for wildlife activity around the surrounding landscape.

After check-out, your luggage is loaded into the private Safari Land Cruiser and you begin making your way through the sanctuary toward the exit.

The journey remains part of the safari. Wildlife can appear at any point, so the final drive through Taita Hills should not be treated merely as a transfer.

An elephant crossing the road, giraffes browsing near the route or a final unexpected predator sighting can completely change the character of the last morning.

Eventually, you leave the wildlife area and begin travelling toward the Kenyan coast.

According to the established programme, the return journey includes a lunch stop in the Voi area before continuing toward Diani Beach.

The drive gives you time to reflect on how much the landscape has changed since leaving the coast three days earlier.

You began with the tropical surroundings of Diani Beach, travelled into the vast red-earth wilderness of Tsavo East, spent a full night inside safari country and then continued to the contrasting Taita Hills ecosystem.

The three-day duration has also allowed you to experience wildlife at several different times: daytime, late afternoon and early morning.

This matters because animals do not behave identically throughout the day. Temperature, feeding patterns, access to water and predator activity can all influence what you encounter.

A longer safari therefore provides more than additional driving time. It increases the variety of conditions under which you experience the ecosystem.

The private vehicle arrangement also contributes to the quality of the journey. Your party has travelled together throughout the safari without sharing the Land Cruiser with unrelated guests.

For couples, this creates a more personal experience. For families, it offers greater convenience. For photographers and serious wildlife enthusiasts, it allows more attention to be given to the sightings that matter most.

As you approach the coast, the environment becomes progressively greener and the tropical vegetation associated with Diani begins to reappear.

The transition back to the Indian Ocean is part of what makes a safari from Diani Beach so memorable. Within a relatively short holiday, you can combine two completely different sides of Kenya.

Your driver-guide finally returns you to your agreed hotel, resort, villa or other accommodation in Diani Beach.

You can then continue your beach holiday having spent three days experiencing two wildlife destinations, two safari nights and multiple game drives.

For travellers who feel that one night in the bush would be too short but who do not want to commit to a long safari circuit, this three-day itinerary offers an excellent middle ground.

It provides enough time for the safari to develop naturally while remaining easy to combine with a longer stay on Kenya's south coast.

Most importantly, every journey remains unique. The exact elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, antelopes, birds and other wildlife you encounter will depend entirely on nature.

That unpredictability is not a weakness of the safari; it is the reason each experience belongs uniquely to the travellers who were there.

Day 3: Breakfast plus the applicable return-journey lunch arrangements in your confirmed package, followed by drop-off at your Diani Beach accommodation.
Two Safari Environments

Tsavo East National Park & Taita Hills

The three-day itinerary combines two neighbouring yet visually distinctive wildlife areas, giving the safari greater variety.

Days 1 & 2

Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East is one of Kenya's great wilderness destinations, celebrated for its red-earth scenery, enormous horizons and famous red-dusted elephants.

The park also supports lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, antelopes and rich birdlife, making it ideal for a longer wildlife experience rather than only a brief visit.

Days 2 & 3

Taita Hills & Salt Lick

Taita Hills provides a contrasting landscape of plains and hills with an active wildlife ecosystem supporting elephants, buffalo, giraffes, predators and numerous other species.

The Salt Lick area is especially memorable for travellers wanting to combine traditional game drives with one of Kenya's most distinctive safari-lodge settings.
