One Extraordinary Journey Across Kenya

The 8 Days Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi is designed for travellers who want to turn a relaxing holiday on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast into a complete overland wildlife journey through some of the country's most celebrated safari destinations.

Instead of returning to Diani after your safari, the route continues north and west across Kenya before finishing in Nairobi. This makes the itinerary particularly attractive for travellers whose international flight departs from Nairobi or who wish to continue exploring the capital after their safari.

The journey begins in Tsavo East National Park, a vast wilderness famous for its red-dusted elephants, open savannah, lions, buffalo, giraffes and dramatic red-earth landscapes.

From Tsavo East you continue into Tsavo West, where the scenery changes considerably. Volcanic terrain, hills, lava formations, springs and denser vegetation create a safari experience that feels very different from the broad plains of Tsavo East.

The route then reaches Amboseli National Park, one of Africa's most celebrated elephant destinations. Large elephant families roam the plains and wetlands while Mount Kilimanjaro dominates the southern horizon when weather conditions are clear.

From southern Kenya, the safari travels toward the Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru National Park. The ecosystem is particularly important for rhino conservation and adds woodland, lake and escarpment habitats to the journey.

The final major wildlife destination is the Masai Mara, internationally renowned for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and abundant plains game. During the seasonal Great Migration period, wildebeest and zebra may also move through the wider Mara ecosystem.

After exploring the Mara, the safari finishes in Nairobi rather than requiring you to retrace the entire route to the coast.

Throughout the journey, your party travels privately in a 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser with a professional driver-guide. This allows greater flexibility at wildlife sightings and creates a more personal safari experience.

From Diani's Indian Ocean coastline to Tsavo's red elephants, Amboseli's Kilimanjaro views, Nakuru's rhino country and the big-cat plains of the Masai Mara — this is a true coast-to-capital Kenya safari.

Detailed 8 Days Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi Itinerary

The programme below gives a detailed overview of the journey. Game-drive routes and timings remain flexible according to wildlife movements, weather, road conditions and your confirmed accommodation.

Day 01

Diani Beach → Tsavo East National Park

Coast to Wilderness · Red Elephants · Afternoon Game Drive

Your eight-day Kenya safari begins with collection from your hotel, resort or villa in Diani Beach. After meeting your professional driver-guide, you settle into your private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser and begin the journey away from Kenya's Indian Ocean coast.

The transition from beach holiday to safari happens gradually. Coconut palms and humid coastal vegetation give way to increasingly dry inland landscapes as you travel toward Tsavo East National Park.

Tsavo East forms part of the enormous Tsavo ecosystem and provides a dramatic introduction to Kenya's wilderness. Its vast landscapes, red soil and enormous skies immediately create a very different atmosphere from the coast.

After entering the park, your first game drive begins. The pop-up roof of your Land Cruiser provides elevated wildlife viewing while your driver-guide searches the surrounding bush and plains.

Elephants are among Tsavo East's most famous inhabitants. The animals frequently cover themselves in the park's fine red soil after bathing, creating the distinctive appearance that has made Tsavo's red elephants internationally recognisable.

You may encounter elephant families travelling toward water, solitary bulls feeding beside the road or herds crossing the open landscape. Watching elephants at a respectful distance provides opportunities to observe social behaviour between adults, juveniles and young calves.

Other possible sightings include buffalo, giraffes, zebra, impala, waterbuck and numerous other herbivores.

Your guide also searches carefully for predators. Lions occur throughout the ecosystem and may be found resting beneath vegetation or moving through more open country.

Leopards are considerably more secretive. Their camouflage allows them to disappear into vegetation, making every leopard encounter particularly special.

You continue toward your confirmed lodge or camp while game viewing along the way. After check-in and lunch, there is time to relax before the afternoon safari.

Later in the day, temperatures begin to fall and wildlife can become more active. Elephants move toward water, giraffes emerge from shaded areas and predators may begin preparing for the evening.

The late-afternoon light is particularly beautiful in Tsavo East, where the red earth and warm sunlight create excellent photographic conditions.

You return to your lodge or camp for dinner and your first night in the African wilderness.

Day 1: Lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at your confirmed Tsavo East lodge or camp.
Day 02

Tsavo East → Tsavo West National Park

Morning Game Drive · Changing Landscapes · Volcanic Wilderness

The second day begins with an early morning game drive in Tsavo East. These cooler hours can be particularly productive because many animals are active before daytime temperatures rise.

Your guide searches for wildlife encountered the previous day as well as new species and predator activity. Lions may still be moving after the night, while elephants and other herbivores begin travelling between feeding and watering areas.

After breakfast, you check out and continue game viewing as you leave Tsavo East and travel toward Tsavo West National Park.

Although the two parks belong to the same greater ecosystem, their landscapes are remarkably different.

Tsavo West is characterised by more varied terrain, including rocky ridges, volcanic formations, lava fields, woodland and natural springs. This change in scenery is one reason combining both parks provides a richer safari experience than visiting only one.

Wildlife includes elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra and numerous antelope species. Lions and leopards also occur, although the denser vegetation can make predator sightings more challenging and therefore especially rewarding.

Depending on your confirmed route and accommodation, the safari may include some of Tsavo West's well-known natural features.

One of the best known is Mzima Springs, where underground water emerging from the Chyulu Hills supports a remarkably green environment within the otherwise dry ecosystem.

The contrast between spring-fed vegetation and the surrounding volcanic landscape demonstrates the extraordinary ecological diversity of Tsavo West.

You continue to your lodge or camp for check-in and lunch before enjoying further wildlife viewing during the afternoon.

Your guide uses experience, animal tracks, alarm calls and information from the wider safari environment to identify productive areas.

As evening approaches, you return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at your confirmed Tsavo West lodge or camp.
Day 03

Tsavo West → Amboseli National Park

Morning Wildlife · Kilimanjaro Country · Elephant Plains

Your third day begins in Tsavo West with another opportunity for wildlife viewing before continuing toward Amboseli National Park.

The journey takes you through changing landscapes as the rugged terrain of Tsavo gradually gives way to the broad plains associated with the Amboseli ecosystem.

As you approach Amboseli, Africa's highest mountain may begin to appear on the horizon.

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to approximately 5,895 metres above sea level. Although the mountain itself lies across the border in Tanzania, some of its most famous wildlife views are experienced from Amboseli in Kenya.

Kilimanjaro visibility is entirely weather dependent. Cloud can hide the summit even on otherwise pleasant days, so a completely clear mountain view can never be guaranteed.

After entering Amboseli, you begin exploring an ecosystem very different from Tsavo.

Open plains allow long-distance wildlife viewing, while permanent wetlands supplied by underground water support animals even when the surrounding landscape appears extremely dry.

Elephants are the principal attraction. Amboseli is internationally renowned for its elephant population and provides outstanding opportunities to observe family groups moving naturally through the ecosystem.

Large bulls may also be encountered alone or in smaller associations. Some of Amboseli's mature elephants are particularly impressive because of their size and tusks.

Other wildlife may include buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and numerous bird species.

Lions are present and your driver-guide searches likely habitats while watching for the reactions of prey animals.

You continue to your lodge or camp for lunch and relaxation before an afternoon game drive.

Later in the day, the combination of elephants, open plains and Kilimanjaro can create some of the most memorable photographic scenes of the entire safari.

You return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight in Amboseli.

Day 3: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at your confirmed Amboseli lodge or camp.
Day 04

Amboseli → Great Rift Valley

Sunrise Game Drive · Elephants · Journey toward Lake Nakuru

Day 4 begins with an early morning game drive in Amboseli. Morning is often one of the best periods for photography because the light is softer and temperatures are cooler.

When weather conditions cooperate, Mount Kilimanjaro may be clearer before cloud develops around the summit.

Your guide searches the plains for elephant families moving between feeding areas and wetlands.

Predators may also remain active during these early hours, providing another opportunity to search for lions before they settle into shade.

After breakfast, you check out and begin the longer journey north toward Kenya's Great Rift Valley.

This transfer is an important geographical part of the safari. You leave the semi-arid landscapes of southern Kenya and travel toward the elevated central regions before descending toward the Rift Valley.

The changing scenery reveals just how diverse Kenya is within relatively short distances.

Depending on road conditions and your confirmed programme, appropriate comfort and meal stops are made along the route.

Your driver-guide manages the day's pace so that the journey remains as comfortable as practical while positioning you appropriately for the next stage of the safari.

The Rift Valley introduces a new ecological chapter. Lakes, escarpments, woodland and higher-altitude landscapes contrast sharply with Tsavo and Amboseli.

You arrive at your confirmed accommodation in the Lake Nakuru or Rift Valley region for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in the Lake Nakuru / Rift Valley region.
Day 05

Lake Nakuru National Park → Masai Mara

Rhino Country · Rift Valley Wildlife · Journey to the Mara

After breakfast, you begin exploring Lake Nakuru National Park, one of the most distinctive wildlife areas on this itinerary.

Unlike the enormous open landscapes of Tsavo or Amboseli, Lake Nakuru offers a more compact ecosystem combining woodland, grassland, rocky escarpments and the lake environment.

The park is particularly important for rhino conservation and provides opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos.

White rhinos are generally associated with more open grazing areas, while black rhinos can be considerably more secretive and may favour areas with greater vegetation cover.

Rhino sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed, but their presence makes Lake Nakuru an important addition to a safari that already offers strong elephant and big-cat opportunities.

The park also supports buffalo, giraffes, zebra, waterbuck, baboons and numerous other species.

Leopards occur within the ecosystem and are sometimes encountered in wooded areas, although their secretive nature makes every sighting unpredictable.

Lake Nakuru is also known for birdlife. Flamingo numbers fluctuate naturally according to water levels and feeding conditions, so historical images of enormous concentrations should not be interpreted as a guaranteed modern-day sighting.

After your game-viewing experience, you leave the Nakuru region and begin the journey toward the Masai Mara.

The route gradually leads into the landscapes associated with the wider Mara ecosystem.

As you approach your destination, anticipation builds for the final major wildlife chapter of the safari.

Depending on arrival time, there may be an introductory game drive before proceeding to your lodge or camp.

Dinner and overnight are enjoyed in the Masai Mara region.

Day 5: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at your confirmed Masai Mara lodge or camp.
Day 06

Full-Day Masai Mara Safari

Lions · Cheetahs · Leopards · Elephants · Plains Wildlife

Day 6 is dedicated to exploring the Masai Mara, one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife ecosystems and the climax of your journey from Diani Beach toward Nairobi.

The Mara's rolling grasslands support an exceptional diversity and density of wildlife. Large populations of herbivores provide the ecological foundation for an equally impressive predator community.

Your day may begin early when temperatures are cool and predators can be particularly active.

Lions are among the Mara's most sought-after animals. They may be encountered as prides, smaller family groups, coalitions of males or solitary individuals.

Rather than simply photographing a lion and immediately moving away, a private safari allows time to observe behaviour when conditions are appropriate.

Cheetahs are another major attraction. The open plains provide suitable habitat for their high-speed hunting strategy, and they may use termite mounds or slightly raised ground to survey surrounding herds.

Leopards are considerably more secretive. Riverine woodland and trees can provide suitable resting and hunting habitat, and your guide searches carefully for subtle signs of their presence.

The Mara also supports elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, topi, gazelles, hippos, crocodiles and many other species.

During the seasonal Great Migration period, large numbers of wildebeest and zebra may enter the Mara ecosystem from the Serengeti.

The migration is driven by rainfall, water and grazing conditions rather than a fixed calendar. Exact herd locations therefore change from year to year.

River crossings are even less predictable. Wildebeest may gather near a river for hours or days without crossing, move away or begin crossing suddenly.

For this reason, responsible safari planning never guarantees a river crossing on a particular day.

Outside migration season, the Masai Mara remains an outstanding year-round safari destination because of its large resident wildlife population.

Your driver-guide structures the day's game viewing according to current wildlife conditions and your interests.

If big cats are a priority, more time can be dedicated to suitable predator areas. If photography is particularly important, the private vehicle provides greater flexibility to remain at productive sightings when regulations and conditions permit.

The objective is not simply to accumulate species on a checklist but to experience wildlife behaviour in its natural environment.

As the afternoon light softens across the grasslands, the Mara becomes particularly atmospheric.

You return to your lodge or camp for dinner and another night in the wilderness.

Day 6: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at your confirmed Masai Mara lodge or camp.
Day 07

Masai Mara – Second Full Safari Day

Extended Game Viewing · Big Cats · Migration Country

A second full day in the Masai Mara is one of the most valuable features of this eight-day itinerary.

Wildlife safari is inherently unpredictable. A leopard that remained hidden yesterday may appear today. Lions that spent hours sleeping may begin hunting, while elephants and buffalo can move considerable distances between game drives.

Having another complete day means there is less pressure to rush from one sighting to another.

Your guide can explore different habitats or revisit areas that produced interesting wildlife activity on the previous day.

Early morning again provides excellent opportunities for predator activity.

Tracks across the road, alarm calls from antelopes and the behaviour of other animals can provide important clues.

Experienced guiding involves interpreting these signs rather than simply driving between known locations.

Lion behaviour can be particularly fascinating when sufficient time is available. Pride members interact socially, cubs play, females monitor potential prey and territorial males may patrol or communicate across considerable distances.

Cheetahs require patience for a different reason. They may spend long periods scanning the landscape before deciding whether conditions are suitable for hunting.

Leopards remain one of the greatest prizes of any Mara safari. Their ability to disappear into vegetation means that even experienced guides must combine knowledge with patience and good fortune.

The wider ecosystem remains equally rewarding even when the big cats are resting.

Elephant families move across the plains, giraffes browse around wooded areas and enormous herds of buffalo may occupy productive grazing zones.

Zebra, wildebeest, topi and gazelles create the classic wildlife-rich landscape associated with the Mara.

Birdlife ranges from large raptors to colourful smaller species, making the reserve rewarding even between major mammal encounters.

Depending on your programme, lunch may be enjoyed at your accommodation or arranged as part of an extended game-viewing day.

Your guide always works within applicable reserve regulations and responsible wildlife-viewing principles.

Animals should be given adequate space and never pressured simply to produce a particular photograph.

As the final afternoon in the Mara develops, there is time to appreciate the landscape itself.

The rolling grasslands, scattered trees and enormous sky are as much a part of the Masai Mara experience as any individual animal.

You return to your lodge or camp for your final safari dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Final overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day 08

Masai Mara → Nairobi

Final Wildlife Experience · Scenic Journey · Nairobi Drop-Off

Your final safari morning begins in the Masai Mara. Depending on the confirmed programme and departure schedule, there may be an opportunity for one final early game-viewing experience.

Morning is an appropriate time to search again for animals that may have proved elusive during the previous days.

Lions may still be active after the night, cheetahs may be scanning the plains and there is always the possibility of an unexpected final encounter.

After breakfast, you check out and begin the journey toward Nairobi.

This final transfer completes a remarkable geographical journey that began beside the Indian Ocean in Diani Beach.

Over eight days, you have crossed some of Kenya's most contrasting landscapes.

Tsavo East introduced the immense red-earth wilderness and its famous elephants.

Tsavo West added rugged volcanic terrain, greener spring-fed habitats and a completely different visual character.

Amboseli brought you into the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and one of Africa's finest elephant ecosystems.

Lake Nakuru introduced the Great Rift Valley, important rhino habitat and a more compact woodland-and-lake environment.

Finally, the Masai Mara provided extended game viewing in one of the world's most celebrated predator landscapes.

The route to Nairobi takes you away from the Mara and through the changing landscapes of the Rift Valley and central Kenya.

Appropriate stops are made according to the day's programme, road conditions and your onward arrangements.

On arrival in Nairobi, you are transferred to the destination specified in your confirmed booking.

This may be a Nairobi hotel, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or another agreed location within the city.

If you have an international flight on the same day, sufficient scheduling allowance should always be built into the itinerary because road travel times can vary according to traffic and other conditions.

Travellers staying overnight in Nairobi can instead conclude the safari at their hotel and continue their Kenyan journey at a more relaxed pace.

The safari therefore ends not simply as a transfer from one location to another, but as the completion of a coast-to-capital journey across Kenya.

You began with the warm Indian Ocean and ended in the country's capital, having travelled through five distinct wildlife areas along the way.

For travellers who want to combine a Diani Beach holiday with a substantial private Kenya safari before departing through Nairobi, this eight-day route provides an excellent balance between destination variety, wildlife viewing and logical onward travel.

Day 8: Breakfast and additional meals according to your confirmed package. Transfer to your confirmed Nairobi hotel, airport or agreed Nairobi drop-off point.
