Three Iconic Kenya Safari Destinations in Five Days

This five-day private safari provides an exciting route from Diani Beach to Nairobi through three of Kenya's best-known wildlife destinations: Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park and the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Unlike the Tsavo-based routes from the coast, this itinerary travels directly toward Amboseli, where the safari begins among open plains, wetlands and some of Kenya's most celebrated elephant herds.

Amboseli's landscape is dominated by the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro. Although the mountain itself stands across the border in Tanzania, Kenya's Amboseli National Park provides some of the most famous views toward its snow-capped summit.

When weather and cloud conditions are favourable, the mountain creates an extraordinary backdrop for wildlife photography. Elephants, lions, cheetahs, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and numerous bird species are among the wildlife that may be encountered.

From Amboseli, your safari travels north into Kenya's Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru National Park.

Lake Nakuru is particularly renowned for its rhino conservation success. Both white and black rhinos occur within the park, alongside buffalo, giraffes, antelopes and an impressive variety of birdlife.

The lake has historically been associated with large concentrations of flamingos, although their numbers naturally vary according to water conditions and food availability.

The third stage of the journey takes you into the legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Here the landscapes open into broad savannahs supporting an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and many other species inhabit this celebrated ecosystem.

Two nights in the Maasai Mara allow considerably more time for wildlife viewing than a simple overnight visit.

Day 4 is dedicated to exploring the reserve, including the Mara River area where hippos and crocodiles may be encountered.

After a final early morning game drive on Day 5, the safari continues to Nairobi, completing a remarkable journey from Kenya's Indian Ocean coast through Amboseli, the Rift Valley and Maasai Mara.

From elephants beneath Kilimanjaro and rhinos in the Rift Valley to the big cats and sweeping plains of the Maasai Mara—this five-day journey connects Diani Beach with Nairobi through three of Kenya's safari icons.

Detailed 5 Days Diani Beach to Nairobi Safari Itinerary

Travel from Diani Beach through Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara before completing your private safari in Nairobi.

Day 01

Diani Beach → Amboseli National Park

Coast to Kilimanjaro Country · Elephants · Afternoon Wildlife

Your five-day private safari begins with collection from your confirmed Diani Beach accommodation. Meet your professional safari driver-guide and settle into your private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser for the journey away from Kenya's Indian Ocean coast.

Travel inland toward Amboseli National Park as the lush coastal scenery gradually changes into the drier landscapes of southern Kenya.

Enter Amboseli through Erimito Gate and begin game viewing as you make your way through the park.

Amboseli is internationally renowned for its elephants, including large family groups that can often be observed crossing the open plains or feeding around the park's permanent wetlands.

Your driver-guide searches for elephants, lions, cheetahs, gazelles, wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, warthogs and numerous bird species.

When weather conditions are favourable, Mount Kilimanjaro creates a spectacular backdrop to the Amboseli landscape.

Continue game viewing until lunchtime before arriving at your booked safari lodge or camp.

Check in, enjoy lunch and take some time to relax after the journey from the coast.

Later, continue your wildlife experience in Amboseli according to the day's operating programme and local conditions.

Return to your booked lodge or camp for dinner and your first overnight in the African wilderness.

Day 1: Lunch and dinner. Overnight at your confirmed safari lodge or camp in Amboseli National Park.
Day 02

Amboseli → Lake Nakuru National Park

Great Rift Valley · Rhinos · Flamingos · Afternoon Game Drive

Begin the morning with an early breakfast before checking out of your Amboseli accommodation.

Leave Amboseli and begin the journey north toward Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya's Great Rift Valley.

This is a longer travelling day connecting two very different wildlife ecosystems and revealing changing landscapes as you move from southern Kenya toward the Rift Valley.

Arrive at Lake Nakuru around lunchtime, subject to road and traffic conditions, and check in at your confirmed safari lodge or camp.

Enjoy lunch and some time to relax before departing for your afternoon game drive.

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya's best-known rhino conservation areas and provides opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos.

The park also supports buffalo, giraffes, antelopes and numerous other species within a relatively compact and scenic environment.

The lake is historically famous for flamingos, which can create striking pink concentrations along sections of the shoreline.

Flamingo numbers vary naturally according to changing water levels, salinity and food availability, so the size of congregations cannot be guaranteed.

Continue exploring the park during the afternoon before returning to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight at your confirmed lodge or camp in Lake Nakuru National Park.
Day 03

Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara National Reserve

Rift Valley to Mara · Big Cats · Mara River

Enjoy breakfast at your Lake Nakuru accommodation before checking out and beginning the journey toward the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Travel through the landscapes of the Great Rift Valley toward one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife ecosystems.

Arrive in the Maasai Mara around lunchtime, check in at your confirmed lodge or tented camp and enjoy lunch.

After some time to relax, depart for your first afternoon game drive in the Maasai Mara.

The reserve is renowned for its exceptional concentration of wildlife and particularly for its predators.

Your driver-guide searches for lions, cheetahs, elephants and buffalo as well as giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and many other species.

Depending on wildlife movements and the day's game-drive route, your exploration can extend toward the Mara River area.

The river is an important part of the greater Mara ecosystem and is home to hippos and Nile crocodiles.

Continue wildlife viewing through the late afternoon before returning to your lodge or tented camp.

Enjoy dinner and your first overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 3: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight at your confirmed lodge or tented camp in the Maasai Mara.
Day 04

Full Day Exploring the Maasai Mara

Early Game Drive · Full-Day Safari · Mara River · Picnic Lunch

Wake very early for tea or coffee before departing on an early morning game drive.

The cooler hours around sunrise are particularly rewarding because many animals are active before the heat of the day increases.

Your driver-guide searches for predators and other wildlife moving through the reserve during these quieter morning hours.

Return to your camp or lodge for a full breakfast.

After breakfast, prepare for an extensive day exploring the Maasai Mara with a packed picnic lunch.

The full-day format allows your driver-guide to travel farther into the reserve and spend more time following wildlife movements than is normally possible during shorter morning or afternoon game drives.

Search for the Mara's famous predators, including lions and cheetahs, while also encountering the plains animals upon which they depend.

Zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, buffalo, gazelles and numerous other herbivores inhabit the ecosystem.

Continue toward the Mara River, where hippos and crocodiles may be observed in and around the water.

During the annual migration season, the wider Mara ecosystem can also host immense concentrations of wildebeest and zebra, although migration timing and river crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy your packed lunch in the reserve at an appropriate location selected according to the day's programme.

Continue exploring during the afternoon, allowing time to search for additional wildlife and enjoy the extraordinary scale of the Mara landscape.

Return to your lodge or tented camp later in the day for freshening up, dinner and your second overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 4: Breakfast, packed picnic lunch and dinner. Overnight at your confirmed Maasai Mara lodge or tented camp.
Day 05

Maasai Mara → Nairobi

Final Morning Game Drive · Lunch En Route · Nairobi Drop-Off

Wake early for your final morning game drive in the Maasai Mara.

This is your last opportunity to search for wildlife in the reserve and perhaps encounter species or behaviours that you have not seen during the previous game drives.

The cool morning conditions may provide excellent opportunities for predator sightings as lions, cheetahs and other animals remain active before daytime temperatures increase.

After your final game drive, return to your lodge or tented camp for breakfast.

Following breakfast, check out and begin the journey from the Maasai Mara toward Nairobi.

Enjoy a final short game-viewing drive en route as you leave the reserve.

Continue toward Kenya's capital through the changing landscapes between the Mara ecosystem and Nairobi.

Lunch is included en route according to the safari programme.

Arrival in Nairobi is planned for the mid-afternoon, although exact timing depends on road and traffic conditions.

Upon arrival, your professional driver-guide transfers you to your confirmed Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Your five-day private safari concludes after a remarkable journey from Diani Beach through Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara to Nairobi.

Day 5: Breakfast and lunch en route. Final drop-off at your confirmed Nairobi hotel or airport.
