Three Weeks Across Kenya

A Complete Private Safari from the Indian Ocean to Nairobi

The 21 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi is our most extensive itinerary in this series, designed for travellers who want to experience Kenya at a genuinely unhurried pace. Three weeks provide something that shorter safaris cannot easily offer: time.

Time allows you to remain with wildlife rather than immediately driving away in search of the next species. It allows you to revisit productive areas, explore different sections of enormous national parks and appreciate the changing character of Kenya's landscapes.

Your journey begins directly from Diani Beach on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast. Your professional driver-guide collects you from your confirmed hotel, resort or villa and you travel inland in a private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser.

Tsavo East National Park provides your first major wildlife experience. The park is defined by vast horizons, red soil and an extraordinary sense of wilderness. Its elephants frequently dust themselves with the iron-rich earth, producing the famous red appearance associated with Tsavo.

Several days in Tsavo East provide opportunities to search for elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, antelopes and numerous other species without treating the park simply as a stop between Diani and another destination.

You then continue into Tsavo West National Park. The transition is striking: volcanic terrain, rocky ridges, woodland and spring-fed habitats create a different visual and ecological experience from neighbouring Tsavo East.

From Tsavo West, the journey continues to Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is celebrated internationally for its elephant population and its position beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.

When skies are clear, Africa's highest mountain provides one of the most recognisable safari landscapes on the continent. Visibility is never guaranteed, but an extended stay provides repeated opportunities for mountain views.

Amboseli's wetlands support elephants, buffalo and rich birdlife, while the surrounding plains are home to giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, lions and hyenas.

The safari then travels north into Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Lake Naivasha provides a refreshing contrast to the dry savannah environments experienced earlier in the journey.

An optional boat safari offers opportunities to observe hippos and a wide variety of water-associated birdlife from a completely different perspective.

Lake Nakuru National Park follows. The park is particularly important for rhino conservation and provides opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos.

Buffalo, Rothschild's giraffes, waterbuck, zebra, baboons and other species contribute additional wildlife diversity.

The final major destination is the Masai Mara, where the benefit of a three-week itinerary becomes particularly clear. Rather than spending only one or two full days in this exceptional ecosystem, you have an extended period for genuine wildlife exploration.

The Mara supports lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hyenas, wildebeest, zebra, topi, gazelles and an extraordinary variety of other mammals and birds.

Repeated game drives provide opportunities to follow predator territories, return to promising areas and observe how wildlife situations develop from one day to another.

During the seasonal Great Migration, wildebeest and zebra may move through the ecosystem in enormous numbers. Their movements are controlled by rainfall, grazing and water availability rather than fixed dates.

River crossings remain completely natural and unpredictable events and therefore cannot be guaranteed. The long Mara stay, however, gives you considerably more flexibility than a brief visit when migration activity is present.

Outside migration periods, the Masai Mara remains one of Africa's great year-round wildlife destinations because of its substantial resident animal populations.

The safari concludes in Nairobi, creating an efficient one-way journey for travellers beginning on Kenya's coast and departing internationally or continuing their holiday from the capital.

Three weeks transforms the safari from a sequence of park visits into a journey through Kenya itself—from the Indian Ocean coast and Tsavo's red wilderness to Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley and the grasslands of the Masai Mara.

Detailed 21 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi

The itinerary provides a carefully paced framework while retaining the flexibility required for genuine wildlife viewing. Exact game-drive routes may vary according to animal movements, weather, road conditions and the location of your confirmed accommodation.

Day01

Diani Beach → Tsavo East National Park

Coast to Wilderness · Red Elephants · First Game Drive

Your three-week safari begins with collection from your confirmed hotel, resort or villa in Diani Beach. Meet your professional driver-guide and board your private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser.

Leave the Indian Ocean coast and travel inland as the tropical scenery around Diani gradually changes into the drier landscapes of Kenya's interior.

Upon entering Tsavo East National Park, your first game drive begins. Broad horizons, red earth and immense wilderness immediately create a completely different atmosphere from the coast.

Your guide begins searching for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, antelopes and predators while travelling toward your accommodation.

Tsavo's elephants are particularly famous because many cover themselves with the park's iron-rich red dust.

After lunch and some time to relax, continue with an afternoon game drive.

As temperatures fall, wildlife activity may increase and the softer evening light creates excellent photographic conditions.

Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and your first night in the wilderness.

Day 1: Lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Tsavo East.
Day02

Full-Day Tsavo East Safari

Elephants · Lions · Savannah · Photography

Begin your first complete day in Tsavo East during the cooler morning hours when many animals are active.

Elephant families may move between feeding and watering areas while giraffes browse among acacias and zebra travel across open country.

Buffalo and numerous antelope species provide additional wildlife opportunities.

Lions are among the park's important predators, while leopards are present but naturally more secretive.

With no transfer scheduled, your guide has time to explore different habitats according to current wildlife activity.

If an interesting sighting develops, you can remain and observe instead of immediately continuing toward another destination.

The park's red-earth landscapes are themselves a major attraction and create distinctive photographic opportunities.

Return after a full day of exploration.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Tsavo East.
Day03

Second Full Day in Tsavo East

Deep Wilderness · Predator Search · Wildlife Behaviour

Your third day in Tsavo East provides another complete opportunity to experience one of Kenya's largest protected wilderness areas.

Wildlife movements change according to temperature, water availability, grazing and predator activity.

Your guide can revisit productive areas from the previous day or explore a completely different section of the park.

Elephants remain a major focus, and longer observation may reveal interactions within family groups that short encounters often miss.

Your guide continues searching for lions and other predators while watching tracks, prey behaviour and alarm calls for clues.

Giraffes, buffalo, zebra, antelopes and birdlife provide constant variety.

The generous itinerary also allows time for smaller animals and the park's immense landscapes.

Return for your third and final night in Tsavo East.

Day 3: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in Tsavo East.
Day04

Tsavo East → Tsavo West National Park

Changing Landscapes · Volcanic Wilderness · Wildlife

After breakfast, enjoy further wildlife viewing while leaving Tsavo East and travelling toward Tsavo West National Park.

The change between the neighbouring parks is striking despite both belonging to the greater Tsavo ecosystem.

Tsavo West introduces volcanic formations, rocky ridges, woodland and thicker vegetation.

Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, antelopes and predators inhabit this rugged environment.

Because vegetation can be denser, successful wildlife sightings often require patient searching.

Continue toward your lodge or camp with game viewing en route where appropriate.

After lunch and time to relax, explore the park further during the afternoon.

Return for dinner and your first night in Tsavo West.

Day 4: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Tsavo West.
Day05

Full-Day Tsavo West Safari

Mzima Springs Region · Volcanic Terrain · Wildlife

Begin early for a complete day exploring Tsavo West National Park.

The cooler morning period can provide excellent wildlife activity as elephants, buffalo and other mammals begin moving through the landscape.

Giraffes, zebra and antelopes provide additional wildlife opportunities while your guide searches for lions and leopards.

Predators can be challenging to locate among the park's vegetation, making successful encounters particularly rewarding.

Depending on your confirmed programme and local conditions, exploration may include the Mzima Springs region.

Underground water creates a lush spring-fed habitat that contrasts dramatically with the surrounding dry country.

The park's volcanic history also contributes to its distinctive scenery and rugged character.

Return to your accommodation after a full day in Tsavo West.

Day 5: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Tsavo West.
Day06

Second Full Day in Tsavo West

Wilderness · Elephants · Predators · Photography

A third day in Tsavo West allows you to experience the park beyond the main transit routes and familiar highlights.

Your driver-guide can concentrate on areas that have recently produced good wildlife sightings or explore habitats not visited during the previous day.

Elephants and buffalo remain important targets, while giraffes, antelopes and numerous bird species provide additional variety.

The extra time also creates further opportunities to search for lions and the more elusive leopard.

Because there is no need to move to another park today, wildlife activity can determine the pace of your game drive.

Interesting sightings can be observed patiently, particularly when animal behaviour suggests that a situation may develop.

The day's programme can also allow more time for landscape photography and quieter moments in the wilderness.

Return for your final evening in Tsavo West.

Day 6: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in Tsavo West.
Day07

Tsavo West → Amboseli National Park

Kilimanjaro · Elephants · Afternoon Game Drive

After breakfast, leave Tsavo West and travel toward Amboseli National Park.

The landscape gradually becomes more open as you approach the Amboseli ecosystem.

Mount Kilimanjaro may appear above the plains when weather conditions are favourable.

Although the mountain lies across the border in Tanzania, Amboseli provides some of its most famous views.

Large elephant families are the park's defining wildlife attraction and frequently move between open plains and permanent wetlands.

Buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and gazelles are also widely distributed through the ecosystem.

After arriving and settling into your accommodation, begin your first dedicated Amboseli game drive.

Return for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Amboseli.
Day08

Full-Day Amboseli Safari

Elephants · Wetlands · Kilimanjaro · Predators

Begin early for another opportunity to see Mount Kilimanjaro while the summit may still be clear.

Mountain visibility is completely weather dependent, but several days in Amboseli provide multiple opportunities.

Elephant families may cross the plains during the cooler morning hours or travel toward the wetlands.

Buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and gazelles provide further wildlife activity.

Your guide also searches for lions, hyenas and other predators.

The permanent wetlands support an especially rich concentration of wildlife and birdlife.

Because you are not transferring to another destination, the day's route can remain flexible.

Return after a full day exploring Amboseli.

Day 8: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Amboseli.
Day09

Second Full Day in Amboseli

Elephant Families · Photography · Kilimanjaro

Your third day in Amboseli provides another full opportunity to explore the ecosystem.

An early game drive may again focus on Kilimanjaro views and predator activity before temperatures rise.

Repeated elephant encounters allow you to observe different family groups and changing behaviour.

Your guide can explore wetland areas, open plains and other productive habitats throughout the day.

If your elephant photography objectives have already been fulfilled, attention can shift toward lions, hyenas, giraffes and birdlife.

The private vehicle provides the freedom to remain longer at sightings that particularly interest you.

As the afternoon light softens, enjoy further game viewing across the plains.

Return for your third night in Amboseli.

Day 9: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in Amboseli.
Day10

Final Full Day in Amboseli

Flexible Safari · Elephants · Predators · Photography

Your fourth full day in the Amboseli ecosystem allows the programme to be shaped around your previous sightings and remaining priorities.

If Kilimanjaro has remained hidden, another early start provides an additional opportunity for mountain photography.

If predators are your priority, your guide can concentrate on areas where lions or hyenas have recently been active.

Elephants remain a constant highlight, and different family groups may be encountered throughout the day.

The wetlands provide opportunities for buffalo and extensive birdlife, while giraffes and plains game occupy drier areas.

The extra day means there is no need to rush from one sighting to another.

Spend time observing behaviour, photography and the interaction between wildlife and landscape.

Return for your final night in Amboseli.

Day 10: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Fourth overnight in Amboseli.
Day11

Amboseli → Lake Naivasha

Great Rift Valley · Freshwater Lake · Optional Boat Safari

After breakfast, leave Amboseli and travel north toward Kenya's Great Rift Valley.

The scenery changes dramatically as the semi-arid southern landscapes gradually give way to greener highland country.

Your destination is Lake Naivasha, one of Kenya's best-known freshwater Rift Valley lakes.

The lake provides a welcome contrast after the traditional savannah game drives of Tsavo and Amboseli.

Depending on your arrival time and confirmed programme, an optional boat safari may be arranged.

Hippos inhabit the lake while African fish eagles, herons, kingfishers and numerous other birds may be observed.

The Naivasha area also provides a more relaxed transition between the southern parks and Lake Nakuru.

Spend the evening at your confirmed accommodation.

Day 11: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at Lake Naivasha.
Day12

Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru National Park

Rhinos · Rift Valley Wildlife · Game Drive

After breakfast, continue through the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Nakuru National Park.

The park combines grassland, woodland, lake habitat and rocky escarpments within a relatively compact area.

Lake Nakuru is particularly important for rhino conservation and provides opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos.

White rhinos are often associated with open grazing areas, while black rhinos may prefer habitats with more cover.

Buffalo, Rothschild's giraffes, waterbuck, zebra, baboons and various antelope species may also be encountered.

Leopards inhabit the ecosystem but remain naturally elusive.

The lake supports abundant birdlife, although flamingo numbers vary according to water levels and feeding conditions.

Spend the day exploring before settling into your accommodation.

Day 12: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in the Lake Nakuru area.
Day13

Lake Nakuru → Masai Mara

Great Rift Valley · Savannah · First Mara Game Drive

After breakfast, begin travelling toward the Masai Mara, the final major wilderness destination of your three-week safari.

The landscape gradually changes as you approach the rolling grasslands of southwestern Kenya.

The Masai Mara forms the northern continuation of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

Depending on your arrival time and accommodation location, game viewing may begin while travelling toward your lodge or camp.

Zebra, wildebeest, topi, gazelles and giraffes may provide your first encounters on the Mara plains.

Elephants and buffalo are widespread, while lions, leopards and cheetahs become major objectives during the days ahead.

Your exceptionally long stay means there is no need to rush the first afternoon.

Settle into your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 13: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. First overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day14

Masai Mara – First Full Safari Day

Lions · Cheetahs · Leopards · Elephants

Your first complete day in the Masai Mara is dedicated entirely to wildlife viewing.

An early start can be especially productive because predators may remain active following the cooler nighttime hours.

Lions may be encountered in prides, family groups, male coalitions or as solitary individuals.

Cheetahs often favour open plains where their exceptional eyesight helps them locate prey.

Leopards are more secretive and are frequently associated with riverine woodland and areas providing cover.

Your guide searches suitable habitats while interpreting tracks, alarm calls and prey behaviour.

Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, topi and gazelles provide constant variety.

Return after your first complete Mara safari day.

Day 14: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day15

Masai Mara – Predator Tracking Day

Big Cats · Wildlife Behaviour · Photography

Your second full Mara day allows your guide to respond to wildlife activity observed during the previous day.

Lions and cheetahs may travel significant distances overnight, meaning their location and behaviour can change completely.

Leopard searches may focus on riverine woodland, drainage lines and other suitable habitat.

The extended itinerary provides time to wait when animal behaviour suggests that something interesting may develop.

A resting cheetah may eventually begin hunting, while lions may change from sleeping to travelling or social interaction.

Elephant families also reward patient observation as individuals communicate and interact.

Your private vehicle can be positioned responsibly according to wildlife movement and photographic conditions.

Return after another rewarding Mara day.

Day 15: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day16

Masai Mara – Extended Wilderness Exploration

Elephants · Buffalo · Big Cats · Plains Wildlife

Another complete day allows you to explore areas of the Masai Mara that may not yet have been visited.

By now, your driver-guide understands which animals and types of wildlife behaviour interest you most.

If leopard remains a priority, additional time can be dedicated to suitable habitats.

If cheetahs have been active on particular plains, those territories can be revisited.

Lion areas may also be explored repeatedly because pride activity changes considerably between days.

Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, topi and gazelles provide constant wildlife activity.

Smaller mammals and birdlife provide another dimension for travellers interested in the complete ecosystem.

Return after another unhurried safari day.

Day 16: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Fourth overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day17

Masai Mara – Great Migration & Wildlife Day

Seasonal Herds · Predators · Mara Ecosystem

Day 17 provides another complete opportunity to explore according to current wildlife conditions.

During the seasonal Great Migration, the day's route may be influenced by the location of wildebeest and zebra herds.

The migration is driven by rainfall, grazing and water availability rather than fixed calendar dates.

River crossings remain particularly unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed for any specific day.

Outside migration periods, the Mara remains an outstanding year-round wildlife destination because of its substantial resident population.

Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hyenas and many antelope species remain throughout the year.

Your guide can combine productive wildlife areas with patient observation and photography.

Return after another full safari day.

Day 17: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Fifth overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day18

Masai Mara – Big Cats & Wildlife Behaviour

Lions · Leopards · Cheetahs · Patient Observation

By Day 18, your extended stay has allowed you to begin recognising the value of repeated wildlife observation.

Individual animals and territories may now be familiar, allowing your guide to revisit locations where particularly interesting behaviour has occurred.

A lion pride encountered earlier may now be hunting, feeding, travelling or interacting with cubs.

A cheetah previously seen resting may become active as hunting conditions improve.

Leopards remain secretive, but repeated searching across suitable habitat creates additional opportunities.

If your major big-cat objectives have already been fulfilled, attention can shift toward elephants, giraffes, buffalo, smaller mammals and birdlife.

The objective increasingly becomes understanding animal behaviour rather than simply counting species.

Return for another evening in the Mara.

Day 18: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Sixth overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day19

Masai Mara – Flexible Wildlife & Photography Day

Favourite Species · Quiet Areas · Private Safari

Your seventh day in the Masai Mara provides an exceptional degree of flexibility.

At this stage, the programme can be shaped around what you have already experienced and what you would still most like to see.

If leopard remains elusive, more time can be dedicated to suitable riverine and woodland habitat.

If a lion pride or cheetah family has provided particularly interesting sightings, their territory can be revisited.

The day can also be used to explore quieter sections of the ecosystem away from frequently travelled routes.

These areas may provide excellent opportunities for landscapes, birds, smaller mammals and peaceful wildlife encounters.

The luxury of a long safari is that every game drive does not need to become a race toward the next famous species.

Return after another relaxed but rewarding day.

Day 19: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Seventh overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day20

Masai Mara – Final Full Safari Day

Final Predator Search · Photography · Mara Sunset

Your final complete day in the Masai Mara is deliberately flexible so that it can reflect everything experienced during the previous week.

Begin early while temperatures are cool and predators may still be active after the night.

If there is a particular species you would like to encounter again, your guide can concentrate on the habitats and territories most likely to provide another opportunity.

Lions may be travelling after nighttime activity, cheetahs may begin searching for prey and hyenas may still be active across the plains.

Elephants, giraffes, buffalo and plains game become increasingly active as daylight strengthens.

If your major wildlife objectives have already been achieved, the day can take a slower approach.

Spend longer with elephant families, photograph landscapes, watch birdlife or simply enjoy quieter areas of the ecosystem.

During migration season, current herd movements may again influence the day's route, although no specific crossing can be guaranteed.

As afternoon light softens across the grasslands, enjoy your final extended Mara game drive.

Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and your final night in the wilderness.

Day 20: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Final overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day21

Masai Mara → Nairobi

Final Morning · Great Rift Valley · Nairobi Drop-Off

Your twenty-first and final day begins in the Masai Mara after three weeks travelling through some of Kenya's most important wildlife landscapes.

Depending on your confirmed departure arrangements, there may be an opportunity for a final early morning wildlife experience before breakfast.

The final morning should never be underestimated. Wildlife remains unpredictable, and a memorable encounter can occur during the last few hours just as easily as during the first days of the safari.

After breakfast and check-out, begin the journey toward Nairobi.

The drive provides an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary geographical progression of the previous three weeks.

Your journey began beside the Indian Ocean at Diani Beach before entering the vast red-earth wilderness of Tsavo East National Park.

Several days in Tsavo East provided time to experience the scale of the park and its famous red-dusted elephants without rushing immediately toward another destination.

Tsavo West then revealed an entirely different character through volcanic terrain, rocky ridges, woodland and spring-fed habitats.

The extended stay in Amboseli brought repeated encounters with elephant families and several opportunities to see Mount Kilimanjaro whenever weather conditions permitted.

The Great Rift Valley then changed the landscape once again. Lake Naivasha introduced a freshwater environment before Lake Nakuru provided important opportunities to search for rhinos.

Finally, the Masai Mara became the wildlife climax of the safari.

Your extended stay allowed you to explore the ecosystem beyond the limits of a conventional two- or three-night visit.

Instead of simply searching for lions, leopards and cheetahs once, you had opportunities to revisit territories and observe how individual animals and situations changed over several days.

This is one of the greatest advantages of a long safari. The experience gradually shifts from identifying species to understanding behaviour.

You begin to notice how elephant families communicate, how predators respond to prey, how animals use different habitats and how the landscape itself influences wildlife movement.

During migration periods, the longer stay also creates greater flexibility to respond to the changing position of wildebeest and zebra herds, while still recognising that individual migration events and river crossings can never be guaranteed.

Comfort stops are made as appropriate during the journey toward Nairobi. Actual driving time depends on road and traffic conditions.

Upon reaching Nairobi, your professional driver-guide transfers you to the destination stated in your confirmed booking.

This may be Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a Nairobi hotel or another agreed destination within the city.

Travellers departing internationally on the same day should ensure that sufficient time is available between the expected Nairobi arrival and flight departure because traffic conditions can vary considerably.

If you are staying overnight in Nairobi, your safari can conclude more leisurely at your hotel.

The one-way Diani Beach to Nairobi route is particularly convenient for travellers who begin their Kenya holiday with time on the coast and want to finish their journey close to the country's principal international airport.

It also avoids unnecessary backtracking to Diani Beach after reaching the Masai Mara and central Kenya.

Across twenty-one days, the safari introduces a remarkable range of habitats: the tropical Indian Ocean coast, Tsavo's red-earth wilderness, volcanic landscapes, Amboseli's wetlands, Rift Valley lakes and the open grasslands of the Masai Mara.

Each destination contributes something different to the overall journey. Tsavo provides scale and wilderness. Amboseli provides elephants and the possibility of Kilimanjaro. Lake Nakuru contributes rhino conservation, while the Masai Mara provides extraordinary predator and plains-game viewing.

Together, these landscapes create a broad picture of Kenya's natural diversity rather than a safari concentrated in a single ecosystem.

The twenty-one-day duration is therefore not simply about spending more days on safari. It allows those days to be used differently.

There is more time for patience, more time for photography, more time to explore quieter areas and more opportunities for the unexpected wildlife moments that cannot be scheduled in advance.

Your 21 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi concludes with drop-off at your confirmed Nairobi destination, bringing an extraordinary three-week private journey across Kenya to an end.

Day 21: Breakfast and additional meals according to your confirmed package. Final transfer to your Nairobi hotel, airport or agreed destination.
