Twenty Days Across Kenya

The Ultimate Diani Beach to Nairobi Safari Journey

Our 20 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi is designed for travellers who want to experience Kenya slowly, thoroughly and privately. Twenty days provide the luxury of time: time to remain with an elephant family, time to search patiently for a leopard, time to revisit productive predator territories and time to appreciate the landscapes between the country's famous national parks.

The safari begins directly from Diani Beach on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast. Your professional driver-guide collects you from your confirmed hotel, resort or villa and you begin the journey inland in a private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser.

The first major wilderness destination is Tsavo East National Park. Immense horizons, red earth and an extraordinary sense of space immediately distinguish Tsavo from the tropical coastal environment you have left behind.

Tsavo East is particularly famous for elephants that frequently dust themselves with the park's iron-rich red soil. Lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, antelopes and numerous other species inhabit this enormous ecosystem.

Three days in Tsavo East provide considerably more wildlife time than a typical short safari from Diani Beach. Rather than entering the park, seeing a few animals and immediately moving onward, you can explore different habitats and allow wildlife activity to determine the pace.

The safari then enters Tsavo West National Park, where the landscape changes dramatically. Volcanic terrain, rocky ridges, woodland and spring-fed habitats create an environment very different from the broad red-earth plains of Tsavo East.

Spending two nights in Tsavo West provides time for more meaningful exploration. Depending on your confirmed route and prevailing conditions, game drives may include the Mzima Springs region and other productive wildlife areas.

From Tsavo, travel onward to Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya's most celebrated wildlife destinations. Large elephant families move between open plains and permanent wetlands, while Mount Kilimanjaro may rise spectacularly above the ecosystem when weather conditions are favourable.

The longer itinerary allows several days in Amboseli. This is particularly valuable because Kilimanjaro visibility can vary dramatically from one day to another. Multiple mornings provide several opportunities for the classic combination of wildlife and Africa's highest mountain.

Your safari then turns north toward Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Lake Naivasha introduces a freshwater environment and provides an opportunity to exchange the traditional game-drive vehicle for an optional boat safari.

Hippos and abundant birdlife inhabit Lake Naivasha, creating a very different wildlife experience from the savannah parks.

Lake Nakuru National Park follows. The park is one of Kenya's important rhino conservation areas and provides opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos together with buffalo, Rothschild's giraffes, waterbuck, zebra and other species.

The final and longest wildlife chapter unfolds in the Masai Mara. The twenty-day itinerary allows an exceptionally generous Mara stay, giving your driver-guide time to explore different wildlife territories rather than repeatedly following the same routes.

Lions, cheetahs and leopards become major objectives, while elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hyenas, wildebeest, zebra, topi and gazelles provide constant wildlife activity.

During the seasonal Great Migration, huge concentrations of wildebeest and zebra may move through the ecosystem. Migration timing and river crossings remain natural events controlled by rainfall, grazing and water availability and therefore cannot be guaranteed for specific dates.

The extended Mara stay is equally valuable outside migration months. Resident wildlife remains exceptional throughout the year, and repeated game drives provide opportunities to observe animal behaviour rather than simply search for new species.

The safari eventually concludes in Nairobi. This creates a logical one-way journey across Kenya for travellers beginning their holiday at the coast and departing internationally or continuing their travels from the capital.

Twenty days gives wildlife the opportunity to dictate the safari rather than the clock. This is not simply a longer itinerary—it is a fundamentally deeper way to experience Kenya.

Detailed 20 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi

The itinerary provides a carefully paced route while retaining the flexibility required for genuine wildlife viewing. Exact game-drive routes may change according to animal movements, weather, road conditions and the location of your confirmed lodge or camp.

Day01

Diani Beach → Tsavo East National Park

Coast to Wilderness · Red Elephants · First Game Drive

Your twenty-day Kenya safari begins with collection from your confirmed hotel, resort or villa in Diani Beach. Meet your professional driver-guide and board your private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser for the journey inland.

As you leave the Indian Ocean coast, the landscape gradually changes from the humid tropical environment around Diani to the drier country of Kenya's interior.

Upon entering Tsavo East National Park, your first game drive begins. The broad horizons, red soil and enormous wilderness immediately create a completely different atmosphere from the coast.

Your driver-guide begins searching for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, antelopes and predators while travelling toward your lodge or camp.

Tsavo's elephants are particularly famous because many cover themselves with the park's iron-rich red dust, producing their characteristic reddish appearance.

After lunch and time to relax, continue with an afternoon game drive as temperatures begin to fall.

The softer evening light provides excellent photographic conditions across Tsavo's distinctive red-earth landscape.

Return to your accommodation for dinner and your first night in the African wilderness.

Day 1: Lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Tsavo East.
Day02

Full-Day Tsavo East Safari

Elephants · Lions · Savannah · Wildlife Photography

Begin your first complete day in Tsavo East during the cooler morning hours when wildlife can be particularly active.

Elephant families may be moving between feeding and watering areas while giraffes browse among acacias and zebra cross the open landscape.

Buffalo and numerous antelope species provide further wildlife opportunities. Lions are among the major predators, while leopards inhabit the park but are naturally more secretive.

Because there is no need to leave Tsavo today, your guide has the freedom to explore according to current wildlife conditions.

An interesting elephant interaction, predator sighting or unusual animal behaviour can be observed patiently rather than abandoned because of a transfer schedule.

The park's enormous scale also allows you to experience quieter sections where the landscape itself becomes part of the safari.

Continue exploring during the afternoon before returning to your accommodation.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Tsavo East.
Day03

Second Full Day in Tsavo East

Deep Exploration · Predators · Elephants · Wilderness

Your third day remains entirely within Tsavo East, giving you an unusual opportunity to experience this enormous park beyond the standard short coastal safari.

Wildlife distribution changes continuously according to temperature, water, grazing and predator movements.

Your guide may revisit an area that produced excellent sightings during the previous day or explore a different section of the park.

Elephants remain one of the principal attractions, and extended observation can reveal social behaviour within family groups that is easily missed during brief encounters.

Your guide also continues searching for lions and other predators while remaining alert to tracks, alarm calls and prey behaviour.

Giraffes, zebra, buffalo, antelopes and birdlife provide additional variety throughout the day.

The slower pace gives you time to appreciate the smaller details of Tsavo's ecosystem as well as its famous large mammals.

Return for your final evening in Tsavo East.

Day 3: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in Tsavo East.
Day04

Tsavo East → Tsavo West National Park

Changing Landscapes · Volcanic Wilderness · Game Drive

After breakfast, enjoy further wildlife viewing while leaving Tsavo East and travelling toward Tsavo West National Park.

Although the two parks form part of the greater Tsavo ecosystem, the change in scenery can be dramatic.

Tsavo West is characterised by volcanic formations, rocky ridges, woodland and thicker vegetation.

Elephants, buffalo, giraffes and antelopes inhabit the park, together with lions, leopards and other predators.

The denser vegetation can make wildlife more challenging to locate, which makes successful sightings particularly rewarding.

Continue game viewing while travelling toward your lodge or camp.

After lunch and some time to relax, return to the park for further afternoon exploration.

Spend the evening surrounded by the rugged landscapes of Tsavo West.

Day 4: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Tsavo West.
Day05

Full-Day Tsavo West Safari

Mzima Springs Region · Volcanic Terrain · Wildlife

Your second day in Tsavo West is dedicated to exploring the park at a more relaxed pace.

Begin with an early game drive while temperatures remain cool and animals may still be active after the night.

Elephants and buffalo are among the major large mammals, while giraffes, zebra and antelopes add variety to the landscape.

Your guide also searches for lions and leopards, although the park's vegetation makes these predators naturally challenging to locate.

Depending on your confirmed programme and local conditions, exploration may include the Mzima Springs region.

Underground water creates a lush spring-fed environment that contrasts dramatically with the surrounding dry country.

The day's slower rhythm provides time for wildlife photography, landscape appreciation and patient observation.

Return to your accommodation for your final night in Tsavo West.

Day 5: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Tsavo West.
Day06

Tsavo West → Amboseli National Park

Kilimanjaro · Elephants · Afternoon Game Drive

After breakfast, leave Tsavo West and continue toward Amboseli National Park.

As you approach Amboseli, the landscape becomes increasingly open and Mount Kilimanjaro may appear above the plains when weather conditions permit.

Although Kilimanjaro lies across the international border in Tanzania, Amboseli provides some of the world's most famous views of the mountain.

Large elephant families are the defining wildlife attraction of Amboseli and frequently move between feeding areas and permanent wetlands.

Buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and gazelles are also common within the ecosystem.

Arrive at your lodge or camp for lunch and some time to relax.

Later, begin your first dedicated Amboseli game drive across the plains and wetland areas.

Return for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Amboseli.
Day07

Full-Day Amboseli Safari

Elephants · Wetlands · Kilimanjaro · Predators

Begin early for another opportunity to see Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds potentially form around the summit.

Mountain visibility remains entirely weather dependent, but the extended Amboseli stay gives you several opportunities.

The cooler morning hours are also ideal for searching for wildlife. Elephants may be crossing the plains or travelling toward the wetlands.

The permanent marshes are essential to Amboseli's ecosystem and support elephants, buffalo and abundant birdlife.

Your driver-guide also searches for lions, hyenas and other predators across suitable areas of the park.

Because no transfer is scheduled, the day's route can respond to wildlife rather than a rigid timetable.

Spend the afternoon exploring additional sections of the park before returning to your accommodation.

Day 7: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Amboseli.
Day08

Second Full Day in Amboseli

Elephant Families · Photography · Kilimanjaro Landscapes

Your third day in Amboseli provides another complete opportunity to experience the ecosystem without rushing onward.

Repeated visits to elephant areas allow you to observe different family groups and a wider variety of behaviour.

An early drive may again focus on Kilimanjaro views and predator activity.

Later, your guide can explore wetland areas, open plains and other productive wildlife habitats.

If you have already enjoyed exceptional elephant encounters, attention can shift toward lions, hyenas, giraffes, birdlife and landscape photography.

The private safari vehicle gives you the flexibility to remain longer at encounters that are particularly interesting.

As evening approaches, enjoy the changing light across the plains before returning to your lodge or camp.

Day 8: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in Amboseli.
Day09

Final Full Day in Amboseli

Flexible Safari · Elephants · Predators · Photography

Day 9 gives you a fourth day within the Amboseli ecosystem and allows the programme to become increasingly personalised around your interests.

If Kilimanjaro has remained hidden during previous mornings, another early start provides an additional opportunity for clear mountain views.

If big cats are a priority, your guide can concentrate on areas where predators have recently been active.

Elephant families remain a constant highlight and repeated encounters can reveal very different behaviour from one day to another.

Amboseli's wetlands also provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and observing interactions between different herbivore species.

The extra day means there is no pressure to constantly search for something new. Time can instead be spent appreciating behaviour, light and landscape.

Enjoy your final afternoon game drive before returning to your accommodation.

Spend your final night in Amboseli before beginning the journey toward the Great Rift Valley.

Day 9: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Fourth overnight in Amboseli.
Day10

Amboseli → Lake Naivasha

Great Rift Valley · Freshwater Lake · Optional Boat Safari

After breakfast, leave Amboseli and travel north toward Kenya's Great Rift Valley.

The scenery changes significantly as the semi-arid landscapes of southern Kenya give way to greener and more elevated terrain.

Your destination is Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake surrounded by fertile landscapes and important bird habitat.

Naivasha introduces a different style of wildlife experience after the traditional game drives of Tsavo and Amboseli.

Depending on your arrival time and confirmed package, an optional boat safari may be arranged.

Hippos inhabit the lake while African fish eagles, herons, kingfishers and numerous other bird species may be observed.

The quieter atmosphere provides a refreshing transition between the southern parks and the destinations ahead.

Spend the evening at your confirmed Lake Naivasha accommodation.

Day 10: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in the Lake Naivasha area.
Day11

Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru National Park

Rhinos · Rift Valley Wildlife · Dedicated Game Drive

After breakfast, continue through the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Nakuru National Park.

The park combines lake habitat, woodland, grassland and rocky escarpments within a relatively compact protected area.

Lake Nakuru is particularly important for rhino conservation and offers opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos.

White rhinos are commonly associated with open grazing areas, while black rhinos may favour habitats providing more vegetation and cover.

Buffalo, Rothschild's giraffes, waterbuck, zebra, baboons and various antelope species may also be encountered.

Leopards inhabit the ecosystem but remain naturally elusive.

The lake supports extensive birdlife, although flamingo numbers fluctuate according to water levels and feeding conditions.

Spend the day exploring before settling into your confirmed accommodation.

Day 11: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in the Lake Nakuru area.
Day12

Lake Nakuru → Masai Mara

Great Rift Valley · Mara Savannah · First Game Drive

After breakfast, begin travelling toward the Masai Mara, the final and longest wildlife destination of your twenty-day safari.

The scenery gradually changes as you approach the rolling grasslands of southwestern Kenya.

The Masai Mara forms the northern continuation of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and supports extraordinary wildlife throughout the year.

Depending on your arrival time and accommodation location, game viewing may begin while travelling toward your lodge or camp.

Zebra, wildebeest, topi, gazelles and giraffes may provide your first introduction to the Mara plains.

Elephants and buffalo are widespread, while lions, cheetahs and leopards become major objectives during the days ahead.

Because your itinerary provides an exceptionally long Mara stay, there is no pressure to rush this first afternoon.

Settle into your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. First overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day13

Masai Mara – First Full Safari Day

Lions · Cheetahs · Leopards · Elephants

Your first complete Mara day is dedicated entirely to wildlife viewing.

An early start can be especially productive because predators may remain active after the cooler nighttime hours.

Lions may be encountered as prides, family groups, male coalitions or solitary individuals.

Cheetahs frequently favour open plains where their excellent eyesight allows them to scan large areas for prey.

Leopards are more secretive and often associated with riverine woodland and other habitats providing cover.

Your driver-guide searches suitable territories while interpreting tracks, alarm calls and prey behaviour.

Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, topi and gazelles provide constant variety throughout the day.

Return to your accommodation after your first complete Mara safari day.

Day 13: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day14

Masai Mara – Predator Tracking Day

Big Cats · Wildlife Behaviour · Photography

Your second full Mara day allows your guide to respond to wildlife movements observed during the previous game drives.

Lions and cheetahs may travel significant distances overnight, meaning their location and behaviour can change completely.

Leopard searches can focus on riverine woodland, drainage lines and other habitats where these secretive cats may occur.

The long itinerary provides time to wait when an animal's behaviour suggests that something interesting may develop.

A resting cheetah may eventually begin hunting, while lions may change from sleeping to travelling, feeding or social interaction.

Elephant families also reward patient observation as individuals communicate and interact.

The private vehicle allows you to remain at productive sightings without being governed by a shared group schedule.

Return after another rewarding safari day.

Day 14: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day15

Masai Mara – Extended Wilderness Exploration

Elephants · Buffalo · Big Cats · Plains Wildlife

Another full day provides the freedom to explore areas of the Mara that may not yet have been visited.

By now, your driver-guide also has a clear understanding of the species and wildlife behaviour that interest you most.

If leopard remains a priority, additional time can be dedicated to appropriate habitat.

If cheetahs have been particularly active on certain plains, those areas can be revisited.

Lion territories may also be explored repeatedly because pride activity changes significantly from one day to another.

Large herbivores provide continuous interest, including elephants, buffalo, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, topi and gazelles.

Smaller mammals and birdlife add another dimension to the experience.

Return to your accommodation after another extensive day.

Day 15: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Fourth overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day16

Masai Mara – Great Migration & Wildlife Day

Seasonal Herds · Predators · Mara Ecosystem

Day 16 provides another complete opportunity to explore the Masai Mara according to current wildlife conditions.

During the seasonal Great Migration, the day's route may be influenced by the current position of wildebeest and zebra herds.

The migration is controlled by rainfall, grazing and water availability rather than fixed calendar dates.

River crossings are especially unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed, even when large herds are present close to the rivers.

Outside migration months, the Mara remains exceptionally productive because of its substantial resident wildlife population.

Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hyenas, antelopes and numerous other species remain throughout the year.

Your guide can combine productive wildlife areas with patient observation and photography.

Return after another complete safari day.

Day 16: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Fifth overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day17

Masai Mara – Big Cats & Photography

Lions · Leopards · Cheetahs · Patient Observation

By Day 17, your extended stay has allowed you to develop a much deeper understanding of the Masai Mara than is possible during a brief visit.

Individual animals and territories may now be familiar, allowing your guide to revisit areas where interesting behaviour has previously occurred.

A lion pride seen earlier may now be hunting, feeding, travelling or interacting with cubs.

A cheetah previously observed resting may become active when conditions favour hunting.

Leopards remain unpredictable, but repeated exploration of suitable habitat creates additional opportunities.

If your major big-cat objectives have already been fulfilled, attention can shift toward elephants, giraffes, buffalo, smaller mammals and birdlife.

The objective becomes increasingly focused on behaviour rather than simply adding species to a list.

Return for another evening in the Mara.

Day 17: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Sixth overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day18

Masai Mara – Flexible Wildlife Day

Favourite Species · Quiet Areas · Safari Photography

Your seventh day in the Masai Mara provides an extraordinary degree of flexibility.

At this stage of the safari, the programme can be shaped strongly around what you have already seen and what you would still like to experience.

If a leopard has remained elusive, your guide can devote more time to appropriate riverine and woodland habitat.

If you have enjoyed particularly interesting lion or cheetah sightings, their territories can be revisited to discover how the situation has changed.

The day can also be used to explore quieter areas away from the most frequently travelled routes.

This may provide excellent opportunities for landscape photography, birdlife and less commonly noticed mammals.

The luxury of a long safari is that every drive does not need to become a race toward the next famous species.

Return to your accommodation after another relaxed but rewarding day.

Day 18: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Seventh overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day19

Masai Mara – Final Full Safari Day

Final Big-Cat Search · Photography · Mara Sunset

Your final complete day in the Masai Mara is deliberately flexible and can be shaped around the experiences of the previous week.

Begin early while temperatures are cool and predators may still be active following the night.

If there is a particular species you would like to encounter again, your guide can concentrate on the habitats and territories most likely to provide another opportunity.

Lions may be travelling after nighttime activity, cheetahs may begin searching for prey and hyenas may still be moving across the plains.

Elephants, giraffes, buffalo and plains game gradually become more active as daylight strengthens.

If your major wildlife objectives have already been achieved, the day can be enjoyed at a slower pace.

Spend longer photographing elephant families, watching birds, observing animal behaviour or simply enjoying the openness of the Mara landscape.

During migration season, current herd movements may influence the day's route, although no specific river crossing or migration event can be guaranteed.

As the afternoon progresses, enjoy your final extended game drive and the changing light across the savannah.

The last Mara sunset provides an appropriate conclusion to an exceptionally long and immersive period in one of Africa's greatest wildlife ecosystems.

Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and your final night in the wilderness.

Day 19: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Final overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day20

Masai Mara → Nairobi

Final Morning · Great Rift Valley · Nairobi Drop-Off

Your twentieth and final day begins in the Masai Mara after an extraordinary journey across Kenya's most diverse wildlife landscapes.

Depending on your confirmed departure arrangements, there may be an opportunity for a final early morning wildlife experience before breakfast.

Even after many days of game viewing, the last morning can still produce an unexpected and memorable encounter. Wildlife remains completely unpredictable, which is one of the qualities that makes safari so compelling.

After breakfast and check-out, begin travelling toward Nairobi.

The journey provides time to reflect on how dramatically the country has changed since leaving Diani Beach almost three weeks earlier.

Your safari began beside the Indian Ocean before entering Tsavo East, where immense red-earth landscapes and red-dusted elephants introduced you to Kenya's interior wilderness.

Several days in Tsavo East allowed you to appreciate the scale of the park and observe wildlife without the pressure of an immediate departure.

Tsavo West then revealed a different side of the greater Tsavo ecosystem, with volcanic terrain, rocky ridges, woodland and spring-fed habitats.

Amboseli provided several days among some of Kenya's most famous elephant families and repeated opportunities for views of Mount Kilimanjaro when weather conditions allowed.

The Great Rift Valley introduced another dramatic geographical transition. Lake Naivasha provided a freshwater environment and the possibility of a boat safari, while Lake Nakuru offered opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos.

Finally, the Masai Mara provided an exceptionally long period of dedicated wildlife exploration.

Instead of trying to experience the Mara in two or three hurried days, you had time to revisit territories, follow predator activity and observe how individual animals and situations changed over time.

The result is a fundamentally different safari experience. The focus moves away from simply asking whether an animal has been seen and toward understanding what that animal is doing.

Comfort stops are made as appropriate during the journey toward Nairobi. Actual travel time varies according to road and traffic conditions.

Upon arrival in Nairobi, your professional driver-guide transfers you to the destination specified in your confirmed booking.

This may be Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, your Nairobi hotel or another agreed location within the city.

If you are departing internationally on the same day, sufficient time should be allowed between your expected arrival in Nairobi and flight departure because traffic conditions can be unpredictable.

Travellers staying in Nairobi can instead conclude the journey comfortably at their hotel and continue with their onward arrangements the following day.

The Diani Beach to Nairobi format makes this itinerary particularly suitable for travellers who have already spent time on Kenya's coast and want to transform the remainder of their holiday into an extensive cross-country safari.

The route avoids unnecessary backtracking to Diani Beach and finishes naturally in Kenya's main international aviation hub.

Over twenty days, you experience an extraordinary range of environments: Indian Ocean coast, semi-arid savannah, red-earth wilderness, volcanic terrain, permanent wetlands, Rift Valley lakes and the grasslands of the Masai Mara.

Each ecosystem contributes a different dimension to the journey and supports a different combination of wildlife.

From Tsavo's red elephants and Amboseli's great herds to Lake Nakuru's rhinos and the big cats of the Masai Mara, the safari brings together many of Kenya's defining wildlife experiences.

More importantly, the generous duration gives you time to experience these places rather than merely visit them.

Your 20 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi concludes with drop-off at your confirmed Nairobi destination, bringing one of our most comprehensive private Kenya safari journeys to an end.

Day 20: Breakfast and additional meals according to your confirmed package. Final transfer to your Nairobi hotel, airport or agreed destination.
