Ten Days from the Indian Ocean to the Masai Mara

Our 10 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi is designed for travellers who want considerably more than a short safari excursion from the coast. Beginning directly from Diani Beach, the itinerary crosses Kenya through some of its most important wildlife ecosystems before finishing conveniently in Nairobi.

The journey begins in Tsavo East National Park, where red earth, immense horizons and elephant herds create an unmistakably wild introduction. Tsavo is one of Kenya's great wilderness regions and offers a completely different experience from the beaches of the south coast.

From Tsavo East, you continue into Tsavo West. Although neighbouring each other, the two parks have noticeably different characters. Tsavo West brings rugged hills, volcanic landscapes, lava formations, woodland and spring-fed habitats into the safari.

The route then continues to Amboseli National Park. Famous for its elephants and views toward Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is one of Kenya's most photogenic wildlife destinations when weather conditions cooperate.

From southern Kenya you travel north into the Great Rift Valley. Lake Naivasha introduces a freshwater environment and the possibility of a boat safari, while Lake Nakuru provides important rhino habitat and a very different combination of woodland, grassland and lake ecosystems.

The safari culminates in the Masai Mara. On this ten-day itinerary, the Mara is not treated as a rushed final stop. Three nights provide two full days for serious game viewing, predator tracking and exploration of different areas of the ecosystem.

The additional Mara time is particularly valuable because wildlife is unpredictable. Lions may move considerable distances overnight, cheetahs change hunting areas and leopards can remain hidden for long periods. More time creates more opportunities without needing to rush between sightings.

After your final Mara experience, the safari travels to Nairobi, where you can be dropped at your confirmed hotel, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or another agreed location.

The defining advantage of this ten-day route is time: rather than simply collecting destinations, you enjoy a progressive journey through Tsavo, Amboseli and the Rift Valley before dedicating three nights to the wildlife-rich Masai Mara.

Detailed 10 Days Kenya Safari from Diani Beach to Nairobi

The itinerary below provides the planned safari flow. Exact game-drive routes and timings remain flexible according to wildlife movements, weather, road conditions and your confirmed accommodation.

Day01

Diani Beach → Tsavo East National Park

Red Elephants · Savannah · Afternoon Game Drive

Your ten-day safari begins with collection from your confirmed Diani Beach hotel, resort or villa. After meeting your professional driver-guide, you settle into your private 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser and begin travelling inland from Kenya's tropical Indian Ocean coast.

The scenery changes steadily as the coastal environment gives way to the drier landscapes associated with the Tsavo ecosystem. By the time you reach Tsavo East National Park, the atmosphere is unmistakably that of Kenya's great wilderness.

Tsavo East is famous for enormous horizons, red soil and elephants that frequently dust themselves with the park's richly coloured earth. These red-dusted elephants have become one of the defining images of Tsavo.

Your first game drive begins after entering the park. The raised viewing roof of the Land Cruiser provides excellent visibility while your guide searches for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, antelopes and predators.

Lions are among the park's most sought-after animals. They may be found resting in shade during warmer periods or moving through the landscape during cooler hours.

Leopards are present but naturally more elusive. A leopard encounter depends on patience, experienced observation and good fortune.

You continue toward your lodge or camp while game viewing along the way, then check in for lunch and some relaxation.

Later in the afternoon, you return to the park for further wildlife viewing. As temperatures fall, elephants and other animals may begin moving toward water or more open feeding areas.

The evening light across Tsavo's red landscape provides a memorable introduction to the safari before you return for dinner and overnight.

Day 1: Lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Tsavo East.
Day02

Tsavo East → Tsavo West National Park

Morning Game Drive · Volcanic Terrain · Mzima Springs Region

Your second day begins early in Tsavo East. Morning temperatures are cooler, and this period can provide excellent opportunities to observe animals before the heat of the day increases.

Your guide searches for predator activity as well as elephant families, giraffes, buffalo and plains game moving through the landscape.

After breakfast, you check out and continue game viewing as you leave Tsavo East and travel toward Tsavo West National Park.

The change in scenery is striking. Tsavo West has a more rugged character, with volcanic formations, rocky hills, woodland and lava landscapes creating a noticeably different environment.

Elephants and buffalo remain important species, while giraffes, antelopes, zebra, lions and leopards also inhabit the ecosystem.

The denser vegetation can make wildlife more difficult to spot than on open plains, but this adds an element of discovery to each encounter.

Depending on the confirmed programme, your exploration may include the Mzima Springs area, where underground water originating in the Chyulu Hills supports lush vegetation within the otherwise dry landscape.

You continue to your lodge or camp for lunch before enjoying another game drive during the afternoon.

The contrast between the two Tsavo parks means that Day 2 feels like a new destination rather than simply a continuation of the previous day.

Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Tsavo West.
Day03

Tsavo West → Amboseli National Park

Kilimanjaro Country · Elephants · Afternoon Safari

After breakfast and wildlife viewing in Tsavo West, the safari continues toward Amboseli National Park.

As you approach Amboseli, the landscape opens dramatically and Mount Kilimanjaro may appear on the horizon when weather conditions are clear.

Although Kilimanjaro lies across the international border in Tanzania, some of the mountain's most famous wildlife views are experienced from Amboseli on the Kenyan side.

After entering the park, your guide begins searching the open plains and wetlands for wildlife.

Amboseli is internationally renowned for elephants. Family groups can often be observed moving between feeding areas and the permanent marshes that sustain wildlife within this otherwise semi-arid ecosystem.

The open landscape provides opportunities to observe elephant behaviour over longer distances, including interactions between adults, juveniles and calves.

Buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and numerous bird species also inhabit the ecosystem.

Lions occur in Amboseli and your guide searches for them while observing tracks, prey behaviour and other signs of predator activity.

You proceed to your lodge or camp for lunch and relaxation before an afternoon game drive.

If Kilimanjaro is visible, the combination of elephants, open plains and Africa's highest mountain creates one of Kenya's most iconic safari scenes.

Day 3: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight in Amboseli.
Day04

Full-Day Amboseli National Park

Elephant Families · Wetlands · Predators · Kilimanjaro

Day 4 gives you a complete day in Amboseli rather than requiring you to leave immediately after one night.

An early start provides another opportunity to see Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds potentially gather around the summit. Mountain visibility remains entirely dependent on weather conditions.

Morning is also an excellent period for game viewing. Elephants may move across the plains while predators can remain active after the night.

Your guide explores different habitats, including open grasslands and wetland areas fed by underground water from the Kilimanjaro region.

These marshes support wildlife even when surrounding areas appear dry. Elephants, buffalo and numerous birds may congregate around productive wetland zones.

The abundance of zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and other herbivores supports Amboseli's predator population.

Rather than following a fixed route regardless of conditions, your guide adapts the day's game viewing according to current animal movements.

Having a full day also allows greater patience at good sightings. If an elephant family is behaving particularly interestingly or lions are active, there is less pressure to immediately move on.

Depending on your lodge location and confirmed programme, the day may be structured as morning and afternoon game drives or a longer exploration with an appropriate break.

You return to your accommodation for dinner and a second night in Amboseli.

Day 4: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in Amboseli.
Day05

Amboseli → Lake Naivasha

Great Rift Valley · Freshwater Ecosystem · Optional Boat Safari

After breakfast, you leave Amboseli and begin travelling north toward the Great Rift Valley.

This transfer connects two very different regions of Kenya. The dry, open landscapes of Amboseli gradually give way to the more elevated and greener scenery of central Kenya.

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake within the Great Rift Valley and provides a welcome change from conventional vehicle-based game viewing.

After arrival and check-in at your confirmed accommodation, the remainder of the day can be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace.

Depending on your selected package and arrival time, an optional boat safari may be arranged.

Lake Naivasha supports hippos and an impressive variety of birdlife. African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons and other water-associated species may be encountered around the lake.

Boat excursions are conducted according to local conditions, and wildlife observations remain natural rather than guaranteed.

The Naivasha overnight also improves the pacing of the wider itinerary. Instead of treating the Great Rift Valley purely as a road transfer, you have time to experience one of its best-known freshwater environments.

You spend the evening at your confirmed Lake Naivasha accommodation.

Day 5: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Overnight at Lake Naivasha.
Day06

Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru → Masai Mara

Rhino Country · Rift Valley Wildlife · Mara Arrival

After breakfast, you travel from Lake Naivasha toward Lake Nakuru National Park for a game-viewing experience in one of Kenya's important rhino conservation areas.

Lake Nakuru combines grassland, woodland, rocky escarpments and the lake itself within a relatively compact ecosystem.

The park offers opportunities to search for both white and black rhinos. White rhinos are more commonly associated with open grazing areas, while black rhinos can be more secretive and favour areas offering greater cover.

As with every wild animal, sightings cannot be guaranteed, but Nakuru's conservation importance makes it a valuable addition to this itinerary.

Buffalo, giraffes, zebra, waterbuck and baboons are among the other possible sightings.

Leopards are present but elusive, while the lake and surrounding habitats support numerous bird species.

Flamingo numbers vary naturally according to lake conditions and food availability and should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed spectacle.

Following your game drive, you continue toward the Masai Mara.

As you approach the Mara ecosystem, the landscape begins opening into rolling grasslands associated with one of Africa's most famous wildlife regions.

Depending on arrival time, wildlife viewing may begin as you proceed toward your lodge or camp.

Day 6: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. First overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day07

Masai Mara – First Full Safari Day

Lions · Cheetahs · Leopards · Elephants · Plains Game

Day 7 is your first complete day dedicated to the Masai Mara, allowing your guide to explore according to current wildlife conditions rather than the demands of an onward transfer.

The Mara supports an exceptional concentration of wildlife. Large populations of zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, topi and other herbivores provide the ecological foundation for a strong predator population.

Lions are among the most sought-after species. They may be encountered as prides, family groups, male coalitions or solitary individuals.

A private safari allows time to observe behaviour rather than simply stopping briefly for photographs.

Cheetahs are particularly associated with open country, where they can survey potential prey over long distances.

Leopards are considerably more secretive and often require careful searching around riverine vegetation and suitable trees.

Elephants and buffalo add another dimension to the Mara experience, while giraffes, hippos and numerous smaller species contribute to the ecosystem's diversity.

During the seasonal Great Migration, large numbers of wildebeest and zebra may enter the Mara from the Serengeti ecosystem.

The movement of the herds is controlled by natural rainfall, water and grazing conditions rather than fixed dates.

For this reason, neither the location of the main herds nor dramatic river crossings can be guaranteed for a particular day.

Outside the migration period, the Mara remains highly rewarding because of its substantial resident wildlife population.

Your guide structures the day around wildlife activity, your interests and applicable reserve regulations.

Day 7: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Second overnight in the Masai Mara.
Day08

Masai Mara – Second Full Safari Day

Predator Tracking · Wildlife Behaviour · Photography

Your second complete day in the Masai Mara gives you one of the most important advantages in safari travel: time.

Wild animals do not operate according to an itinerary. Lions can move during the night, cheetahs change hunting areas and a leopard may remain hidden for hours before suddenly becoming visible.

The additional day allows your guide to revisit productive locations or explore entirely different habitats according to current information.

Morning can be particularly rewarding for predators. Tracks, alarm calls and the behaviour of prey species can provide clues about animals that may be nearby.

If a lion pride is located, there is time to observe interactions between individuals. Cubs may play, females may monitor potential prey and males can communicate or patrol territory.

Cheetah behaviour requires a different kind of patience. Individuals may spend considerable time surveying the plains before deciding whether a hunting opportunity is realistic.

Leopards remain one of the most exciting possible encounters because of their secretive nature and remarkable camouflage.

Even without predator activity, the Mara remains constantly engaging. Elephant families, buffalo herds, giraffes and plains animals move through a landscape that feels quintessentially East African.

Birdlife is equally varied, including raptors and many smaller species.

Photography enthusiasts benefit from the flexibility of the private vehicle, with positioning adapted responsibly according to light, animal movement and reserve rules.

Wildlife welfare always takes priority. Animals should never be pressured, blocked or surrounded merely to create a photograph.

As afternoon turns to evening, you enjoy your final full game drive before returning to camp or lodge for dinner.

Day 8: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Third overnight in the Masai Mara region.
Day09

Masai Mara – Extended Final Safari Day

Unhurried Game Viewing · Big Cats · Mara Wilderness

Day 9 provides another valuable opportunity to experience the wider Masai Mara ecosystem before the journey to Nairobi.

Rather than rushing out of the reserve after breakfast, the programme is designed to preserve meaningful wildlife time on your final full safari day.

Your guide can concentrate on species or behaviours that have become particularly important to you during the journey.

If leopard remains high on your wish list, suitable riverine habitats can receive additional attention. If cheetahs have been particularly active, more time can be spent in open hunting country.

Lion territories can also be revisited to see how pride activity has changed since earlier game drives.

The benefit of a longer Mara stay becomes especially clear on a day like this. Safari is not a controlled attraction in which animals appear on schedule. More time means more opportunities for nature to reveal itself.

Elephants may cross the grasslands in family groups, giraffes browse near woodland edges and buffalo can gather in impressive numbers.

During migration season, the day's route may be adapted according to the location of wildebeest and zebra herds.

Your guide will always prioritise realistic wildlife opportunities over attempting to promise a particular event.

Where accommodation and park-entry arrangements permit, the day's game viewing can be structured for the best balance between wildlife activity, rest and photography.

By late afternoon, you return to your lodge or camp for a relaxed final evening in the Mara.

This is your last night in the wilderness before completing the coast-to- capital journey in Nairobi.

Day 9: Breakfast, lunch and dinner according to your confirmed package. Final overnight in the Masai Mara region.
Day10

Masai Mara → Nairobi

Final Morning · Rift Valley Journey · Nairobi Drop-Off

Your tenth day marks the final stage of a journey that has taken you from Kenya's Indian Ocean coast through some of the country's most celebrated wildlife regions.

Depending on your confirmed programme, there may be time for a final early morning wildlife experience before breakfast.

The last safari hours can still produce memorable encounters. Predators may be active, elephants can appear unexpectedly and the open plains continue to change from one moment to the next.

After breakfast and check-out, you begin travelling toward Nairobi.

The drive provides an opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary variety of landscapes covered during the safari.

You began in Diani Beach, where the Indian Ocean and tropical coastline define the environment.

Tsavo East introduced immense red-earth wilderness and its famous red-dusted elephants.

Tsavo West followed with volcanic landscapes, rocky hills and spring-fed habitats.

Amboseli placed you among elephant families beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, while Lake Naivasha introduced the freshwater ecosystems of the Great Rift Valley.

Lake Nakuru added an important opportunity to search for rhinos before three nights in the Masai Mara brought the safari to its wildlife climax.

As you continue toward Nairobi, appropriate comfort stops are made according to road conditions and your onward arrangements.

Upon arrival, your driver-guide transfers you to the destination specified in your booking confirmation.

This may be your Nairobi hotel, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or another agreed location within Nairobi.

Travellers flying internationally on the same day should always allow a generous buffer between expected arrival and flight departure because road and city traffic conditions can vary.

Those staying overnight in Nairobi can conclude the safari more leisurely at their hotel.

The ten-day itinerary therefore works particularly well for travellers who begin their Kenyan holiday at Diani Beach but intend to depart through Nairobi rather than returning unnecessarily to the coast.

More importantly, it provides enough time for the journey to feel like a true safari rather than a sequence of hurried transfers.

From Tsavo's red elephants and Amboseli's Kilimanjaro landscapes to Nakuru's rhino habitat and the predator-rich plains of the Masai Mara, the route showcases several of Kenya's defining wildlife experiences in one continuous private journey.

Day 10: Breakfast and additional meals according to your confirmed package. Transfer to your confirmed Nairobi destination.
